At first glance, Darren Aronofsky's THE WRESTLER may seem like a departure for the oftentimes frenetic filmmaker, and in some ways it is. When this story of a past-his-prime performer is compared to PI, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, and THE FOUNTAIN, there is relatively little trace of psychoscientific addiction imagery, hip-hop editing, or grimly elegant peeks into dreams, nightmares, and otherworlds. Comic moments are plentiful. Aronofsky's signature close-ups of faces have been replaced with ones that force themselves into wounds inflicted for visceral spectacle. Much of the time the camera floats and bobs with an observant, almost documentary-like quietness, ethereally following the wrestler as if it were his past, and the viewer may perceive vague connections to a later, lonelier, less legitimate Rocky Balboa.But Mickey Rourke isn't the Italian Stallion--he's Randy "The Ram" Robinson, a man who has spent decades slicing himself open in choreographed fights while adoring crowds roar. Pro wrestling isn't as lucrative as it was for Randy in the 1980s, but he stays at it while working menial jobs because performing isn't just the only thing he craves--it's the only thing that, at 50, he knows how to crave. While courting his one true friend, a stripper named Cassidy (Marisa Tomei), Randy does his best to restart a relationship with the angry daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) he abandoned. But Rourke imbues the image of Randy, ready to pounce from the ropes, looking almost as unreal as the box art on action figure packaging, with an expression of pain, desperation, and joy. It's a close-up that makes two things clear. For one, Randy's charisma is inseparable from the crippling fixation that's kept him alive. For another, THE WRESTLER might be at once a simpler and more complex meditation on addiction and eternal struggle than any of Aronofsky's earlier work.

    A Moving Film Sure to be a Great Addition

    From Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain) comes his latest work. Mickey Rourke delivers a powerful performance as washed-up wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson whose life of violent (if not faked) fights, drugs, and image-enhancement has caught up to him. Rourke delivers what is sure to be a contender for Male Lead awards, and has already one several, including a Golden Globe. This is the powerful story of life, loss, and redemption, and is Aronofskys most acclaimed work yet to date. But being so acclaimed, this movie has very high standards to live up to, and I believe that coming from a genius of plots like Aronofsky, this movie fell short of his earlier works such as Requiem for a Dream, but particularly Pi and The Fountain.     OK but not the best!

    Excellent portrayal of a post wrestler career after the spotlight has gone out,and his life is on the downward spiral. Mickey Rourke is a perfect leading character w/ Marisa Tomei as his lover(she's HOT), good story, beleivable and quite realistic. I personally think this was far above the Rocky movies that were made by Stallone way back when. This movie shows that Mickey still has what it takes even though many thought he was all washed up. Great movie Enjoy!

    Charisma, 'A' game must see performances, Direction -little flat, Must see!

    Micky was and is always bringing fascination to the screen. He's charisma carries through the whole show. And Marisa!.. bump, bump. She too brought her 'A' game to this project. There seems to be nothing she cant do, including pole-dance. Shes sexier now than when she was younger. I did find myself wanting to get closer to the characters though. Whether it was the detached touch of docu-drama style or the direction, it seemed as though we didnt quite get close enough to the people in this film. The ending seemed a bit contrived as well, ala-Rocky. But over-all it is a great story with must see actors. Welcome back Micky!.. we missed you!.. JT

    The Wrestler "broken life"

    The wrestler was one of the most moving movies I have seen in quite a while. It hit home with. 6 years ago I new what "the ram" (Mickey Rourke) was going through. The experiences he portrayed, the depression, the anger, the struggles with society were unbelievably accurate. Even portraying the heavy, problematic breathing from the steroid use, which ultimately leads to depression, anxiety and health problems that occurred in this film. He was absolutely broken mind, body and soul. As I can tell you from personal experiences. I will give a real quick short version of my inner relationship with this movie.
