Honesty, Integrity, Ethics--This is The Emperor's Club
Kevin Kline plays Professor William Humbert in this 2002 wonderful movie about a dedicated professor of Classic Roman History--especially ethics and morals--at St. Benedict School for Boys, an upscale academy in the 1970s. Humbert expects a lot of learning and models his boys to become future men of integrity. That is until a real challenge of a boy comes in the name of Sedgewick Bell (Emile Hirsch). Sedgewick is at first brash and refuses to obey. He is full of play, and he has a trunk full of unallowed temptations--playboy magazines, cigarettes, and more. Sedgewick first seduces the boys to become their unofficial leader since he instigates so much fun. But in a sin of his own, Mr. Humbert promotes Sedgewick and exaggerrates his grades so that he becomes one of the top 3 ... As a teacher myself, I was appalled at this point in the movie. How the movie turns out, however, finally re-affirmed my principles. This movie was gorgeously photographed with wonderful music. If you like teacher movies like Mr. Hollands Opus, Dead Poets Society, and Up the Down Staircase, this movie is unlike any of those. Kevin Kline is perfect as the astute professor, who also suffers a mis-justice in the movie. This movie's reaffirmation of fine principles and ethics makes it very unique and very likable.

For the first 15 minutes, I felt that the movie would walk that oft-tread road of teacher-student movies such as Holland's Opus, Finding Forrester, Dead Poets Society etc. But in the end, it takes on a different contour than what I would have imagined through its course, so that was a welcome denouement. The finishing twist is delivered with a flourish, and although I felt that the writer didn't quite have the guts to follow his story to its natural, conclusion, the end was surely a bit unpredictable. The script is tight. What really shines though is the acting. EMIL HIRSCH is, as always, in top form, he neither underplays nor overplays his role getting everything just right. All in all, I will is worthwhile Especially to watch with kids for some decent messages ... Good movie about the differences of personalities and characters of humans.
I was replacing a DVD of this same title that was ruined. I like this movie about the activities in a boys school. It is entertaining to watch as the 'boys will be boys' and to see how each one changes as the movie progresses. It shows that hard work in one's studies can pay off. It also shows that cheating may bring you recognization for a time but usually in the end it, too, has its consequences. And those can be devastating. Kevin Kline's performance is superb as he takes seriously his duties to direct and guide these boys in knowledge and in character. And he is very upset when he can not change one of his student's character no matter how much he tries to encourage him.I was replacing a DVD of this same title that was ruined. The Emperor's Club DVD
Without a doubt, this is one of the most underrated films of the last decade. I must admit that I'm a huge Kevin Kline fan, and some might consider this review a bit subjective because of that. With a similar story to the Robin Williams film "Dead Poets Society", "The Emperor's Club" tells the story of a professor's passion for teaching and of those whose lives have been impacted by it. I've read many reviews that state that "Poets" is a better film. However, I found "Emporer's" to be superior on all counts. The characters are all three dimensional and relatable, the acting is superior and the script is one of the best I've ever seen filmed...Really. The Emperor's Club is THAT good. Don't be looking ... Classic Morals
The Emperor's Club is about a boy's only private school teacher, played by Kevin Kline, whose teaching and relations influence his students in a big way. The main message of the movie is moral based, preaching that honesty is the best policy, and is shown in both the life of the teacher and the students. The movie might be appropriate for older children, depending on your censorship. There are a few instances where bad language is used and two scenes involving the boys looking at girls in an inappropriate manner (magazines and at the swimming dock), but it is only implied... no nudity. The Emperor's Club is a wonderfully made movie, with great acting and a solid, interesting plot.
