An Anniversary Collection for an Anniversary Special
Strangely, this DVD set has been released to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the airing of 'The Five Doctors.' Perhaps furthering the irony is that this serial was also released during the 20th anniversary of the franchise itself. Either way, this DVD collection is actually a two-disc affair (which does raise the price somewhat). On one disc is the 1983 version, but the second disc contains the 1995 version of 'The Five Doctors,' which actually added scenes (lengthening the adventure by 10 minutes) and even remastered the effects of the special itself - giving CGI to what was once inexpensive camera tricks and bizarre rectangles. Despite the changes, the core story remains the same however. In essence, someone is reaching back in time and capturing the previous ... Despite the changes, the core story remains the same however. In essence, someone is reaching back in time and capturing the previous incarnations of the fifth incarnation of the Doctor. The first, second and third (who had all previously teamed up in the adventure 'The Three Doctors') are all brought into the Gallifreyan Death Zone, while the unfortunate fourth Doctor is stuck in some sort of time rift (mainly because Tom Baker, the fourth actor of the Doctor, refused to come back to the role so soon). It's up to the remaining four Doctors to piece together exactly what's happened, rescue their future/past incarnation and defeat the villain behind this - all while trying to survive threats from Daleks, Cybermen and whatever else can be found in the Death Zone. Just about everything with this serial is top-notch. The writer, Terrence Dicks, has crafted a wonderful script, while each of the returning Doctors (and companions!) all play their roles as if they'd never left. However, the first Doctor is played by a newcomer: the late Richard Hurndall, who replaces the original late William Hartnell (who died not long after shooting 'The Three Doctors' ten years back). However, Hartnell does a fine job of stepping into someone else's shoes, and the interaction between all four Doctors is masterfully written - though I do wish the Doctors could have been together for more than one scene overall. Of course, since it's a two disc set, there are an insane level of extras for this release. Disc 1 features two commentary tracks, one listed and one hidden. The listed one is essentially the 'Companion commentary,' featuring Carole Ford (Susan), Nicholas Courtney (the Brigadier), Liz Sladen (Sarah Jane) and Mark Strickson (Turlough). The hidden commentary, however, contains the current Doctor Who, David Tennant, and two crew from the show as well. Their commentary focuses more on their memories of watching, rather than creating, but it's still fun to hear. Also on this disc is over an hour of other specials, including a 52-minute look back at the entire year of 1983 (hosted by the Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker). Disc 2, meanwhile, has commentary from Peter Davison (the Doctor) and Terrance Dicks. On top of this, there's another hour of special features - including outtakes, the original recording of all the doctors in their one scene, a look at the continuity of the serial, and even a few Easter eggs for those persistent fans. Let's make it simple: Do you like Who? Are your favorite Doctors somewhere between 1, 2, 3 and 5? Do you like science fiction? If you answered 'yes' to any of those, this is almost definitely for you. Of course, if you already have the previous release you might want to think it over before purchasing - if you want the bonus special features, then grab it up. If not, you still have the old release.

As a kid my father use to watch Dr. Who, but I thought it was too cheesy. When I got older I could finally appreciate Dr. Who; the acting, cheesy special effects, and weekly plots of the doctor foiling alien plans for world domination. This edition of " The Five Doctors " is the very first Dr. Who adventure I watched as a teenager. It was great then and its still great! This is a must buy for all Dr. Who fans of the old series, and it should appeal to fans of the new series that now watch the doctor's adventures. I watch the updated continuing adventures of the doctor in the form of Matt Smith and David Tennant. This edtion has Four doctors and a cameo of sorts by Tom Baker, the most popular doctor before David Tennant's tenth doctor. You will see early versions of the ... Best of all TIME!!!!!!!
I absolutley love my Doctor Who - The Five Doctors!!!!!!! This is one of the best Doctor Who episodes ever. It contains all of the first five Doctors, it has a fantastic plot and it also includes none other than the Doctor's number one nemesis, The Master. Also we must not forget the beautiful assistants. To top it off even the cyberman and daleks are present. This episode provides an inside look at Gallifrey and it's politics. This is an episode not to be missed. Classic Doctor Who!
Classic Doctor Who! A great story set on Gallifry, it's good to see four of the first five Doctors interacting with each other along with many other characters from the first 25 years of the series.

It was so much fun watching the first five Doctors and companions in a movie together! A wonderful movie for every Classic Whovian!
