Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed by Electronic Arts pits you behind the wheels of over 80 of Porsche's classic and state-of-the-art models (from the 356 to the 2000 911 Turbo), where you'll maneuver through the twists and turns of European open roads. Modes of play include a career mode from Porsche's 50-year history (Evolution Mode); a Factory Driver Mode that's mission-based; improved road handling with a new four-point physics model; 14 courses with five circuit courses, branching paths and nine European open roads; and an eight-player multi-player mode via modem (including peer-to-peer), LAN or other Internet connection (from the EA Racing network at www.earacing.com). Other highlights include crashes, extra traffic, a new graphics engine, twists and turns, jumps, replays, four camera angles, adjustable visual options (detail, wide angle view, screen size, lighting effects, rendering, distance, headlights, lens flare and gamma correction) and audio options (music, sound, speech, world sounds, quality, 3D audio and engine volume). The game even lets you use your car's signals, horn, handbrakes, headlights and hazard lights. The Factory Driver Mode consists of receiving assignments, reviewing course layouts and adjusting vehicle settings such as transmission, ABS, traction control, roof and damage. It also allows viewing of team profiles or bios of each racer in the game. Evolution Mode is a one-player career mode that lets you compete in three eras spanning the company's 50-year history, beginning in the Classic Era. In the Garage Screen you'll get to check out the cars you own, perform maintenance, buy and sell cars and more. From there, the Porsche Center Screen gives you the option to: select the interior and exterior color of your car(s); test drive it; do a car comparison; access the showcase for details on the car; and ultimately to purchase your desired vehicle. Get a used car from the Used Cars Screen and even purchase and install parts for it. If it's damaged, take it to the Repair Screen and take a look at the efficiency percentage of each part before repairing it. Then you might want to enter the Paint Shop Screen where you can choose body type, interior color, two-digit decal numbers -- even choose from a selection of trim design packages. Choose either the Quick Race Mode or Quick Knockout Mode. Knockout Mode takes place on circuit tracks and when a driver finishes in last place, he's removed until a single driver remains. If you're not racing, check out the Porsche Chronicle, where you can view selected photographs, print media ads and video clips of some of Porsche's best models.

NFS PU is an excellent game. No doubt one of my favorites.
Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed. The fifth installment in Electronic Arts' NFS series doesn't leave us hungry for action. It is a well-designed game centered around--you guessed it--Porsches. With more than 80 cars specially tailored to match real life performance, NFS PU definitely doesn't cut back on your thirst for vehicular action. Many different modes allow the player to drive to their specific type of preference. You can single race, compete in Factory Driver events, or step up to the big challenge: Evolution Mode. An innovative addition to the NFS PU game, this mode allows the player to buy their own Porsches, starting in 1950, and racing to earn cash, unlock new events, and progress through the years up until 2000. Evolution Mode is divided into 3 distinctive eras: Classic Era ... Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed. The fifth installment in Electronic Arts' NFS series doesn't leave us hungry for action. At the end of each event, the years move forward a little bit, and new cars are available, and old ones are no longer for sale (sometimes). At the end of each era there is a special race that you can compete in to win a Race Version car from that era. Winning the Classic Era Bonus Race awards you the revolutionary 1956 550A Spyder, the Golden Era Bonus Race nets you the inspirational 1978 935 "Moby Dick", and winning the Modern Era Bonus Race wins you the 1998 Porsche 911 GT1. One of my personal favorites with the Evolution Mode is the inclusion of a Used Car Market, where you can buy damaged cars from previous years for your garage, fix them up, and customize/upgrade them to your needs. Speaking of upgrading, NFS PU is the first NFS to allow you to upgrade your car from numerous different categories and actually pick out what you want to upgrade (although still somewhat generic). NFS High Stakes allowed upgrades, but on the level of "Level 1" "Level 2" etc. You can sell your old cars in the Used Car market as well. Also, as the years progress, older cars will tend to become more valuable due to inflation, to the point of an 11,000 credit 1950 356 will inflate to over 100,000 credits in the late 1990's! Porsche Unleashed also offers a challenging Test Driver mode, where you can take on 36 challenges, increasing in difficulty. Along the way, you will meet new team members, accept race challenges, and perform stunts. You can also get promotions, which will land you new special cars with paint jobs that you can't get anywhere else in the game. Multiplayer is also available. As with the previous NFS title, you can save replays and view them later. Now there is one thing that should be mentioned. Some people have had problems with an error called PORSCHE.ICD ERROR. It basically makes it so every time you try to load your profile to start the game it will crash and give you this error. No one to date has figured out a solution to this. It is in my experience that this usually comes along if you keep the bonus cars won in Evolution Mode in your garage when you quit the game. Although they are fun to drive, I usually sell them on the Used Car Market as soon as I win them. However, not everyone has this problem, and although it is very upsetting when you lose all progress and must start over, it definitely is a game you will play over and over again. I have had this game for over 6 years now, and I am every bit happy with it. It has gotten me interested in Porsches, and it would be an excellent gift for someone with a keen interest in the Porsche history.

Aaah, retro fun from the glory days!
Just as I remembered it. Fun, compelling and great racing! A bit fiddly getting it to run on Windows 7, but there are great sources online to help you with the correct fixes. Now it runs flawlessly on my PC with all graphic settings maxed out. Brilliant!!

One of those good old games you keep going going back to, I have liver cancer and it still gives me pleasure to play on a lap top.. Of cause I can't beet my old records....but it is still fun to play evven at 61! So maybe we can compare times when we all get to the other side of the fence. Runs on 95 to win 7. I don't know about win 8 but nothing seems to run on that
