If you are at all into speed metal/thrash, then you will have heard this album's title a millio times, and you will have heard it lauded and bigged-up with so much hype and praise over the years. The praise is justified, as are all the plaudits. This is one of THE essential albums of the 'Big Four' of the American thrash scene. Mustaine brought even more technicality and anger to the table with this one, and the album's riffs and solos still have people scratching their heads twenty years on. The guitar tone is set to 'annhilate', the solos blistering and and times, staggering, and the rhythm in a lot of passages, just as complex as solo work. The lyrics, as per usual with Dave Mustaine, are thought provoking, political and full of snarling anger - as are his vocals. There's no deft touch ... One of the greatest thrash albums of all time, 1990's Rust In Peace is a definitive benchmark to headbanging, riffing, soloing and all around thrashing. Progressive drumming of Nick Menza, the ferocious, galloping bass of Dave Ellefson combine to form an excellent rhythm while the ferocious riffs of Mustaine and incredible solos of Marty Freidman lead the way. Check out Tornado of Souls, Holy Wars, and, well, every single track on the album is killer, even Dawn Patrol, brilliantly leading the way to the album's finale Rust In Peace... Polaris. If not the best, one of the 5 best thrash albums ever.
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Not just metal albums. The tightness of this version of Megadeth was amazing. I actually saw them play the 20th anniversary tour in New Jersey and Long Beach, Ca in two weeks apart. They were still amazing. From first song to the last this album is incredible. Still after 21 years.
