"This book is best used by anthropologists and folklorists, but students in Chicano studies would find it useful as well . . . Morin's analysis of social science and literary perspectives is solid. Synopsis
Am rico Paredes (1915-99) is one of the seminal figures in Mexican American studies. With this first book-length biography of Paredes, author Jos R. L pez Mor n offers fresh insight into the life and work of this influential scholar, as well as the close relationship between his experience and his thought. Mor n shows how Mexican literary traditions--particularly the performance contexts of oral "literature"--shaped Paredes's understanding of his people and his critique of Anglo scholars' portrayal of Mexican American history, character, and cultural expressions. Although he surveys all of Paredes's work, Mor n focuses most heavily on his masterpiece, With a Pistol in His Hand. It is in this book that Mor n sees Paredes's innovative interdisciplinary approach most effectively expressed. Dealing as he did with a people at the intersection of cultures, Paredes considered the intersection of disciplines a necessary locus for clear understanding. Mor n traces the evolution of Paredes's thought and his battles to create a legitimate home for his approach at the University of Texas. A voice for Chicano consciousness in the late 1960s and thereafter, Paredes championed Mexican American studies and encouraged a generation of scholars to consider this culture a legitimate topic for research. Urging the application of context to the understanding of oral texts, he challenged then-current methods of folklore and anthropological study in general. Paredes's name will continue to resonate in Mexican American studies, American folklore, and Anthropology, and his work will continue to be studied. Am rico Paredes: Folklorist of the Border makes a strong case for the lasting importance of Paredes's work, especially for a new generation of scholars., Américo Paredes (1915-99) is one of the seminal figures in Mexican American studies. - 5***r (181)- Évaluation laissée par l'acheteur.Six derniers moisAchat vérifiéOne of the best shopping experiences that I've had on ebay: thoughtful speedy communication, ultra fast shipping with careful packaging, and great price. Item came as described. Regarding the price of the CD- as I write this another seller is asking over $200 for it. Zuber's price was $35.00. How's that? I know these people have some negative reviews, but I can tell that they strive for improvement and better customer service. Highly recommended seller. Thanks Zuber!
- s***m (290)- Évaluation laissée par l'acheteur.Six derniers moisAchat vérifiéA new copy of a rare out-of-print CD was packed in a box mailer and was quickly shipped. I can't remember the last time any merchant packed a CD in a box--usually they throw it in an envelope and the CD or case arrive damaged--so this seller rates the BEST score possible! The seller sent a message telling me that the CD was shipped and gave instructions in case there were any problems (there were none). Great experience...Gret Seller!!!
- l***1 (1374)- Évaluation laissée par l'acheteur.Six derniers moisAchat vérifiéGreat seller; seller shipped the book SUPER FAST, FREE and with tracking number/information. The carrier used by seller was great, made the delivery in the wee hours of the morning and notified me immediately. Also, the book came in water proof bag, which is greatly appreciated since it was damp outside given the early delivery. I am so pleased with seller's description of this book, very accurate. Great communication too; rate seller 10++++++EL PRINCIPE Y LA BELLA CUBANA. LOS AMORES DE DON ALFONSO By Roberto G. Fernandez (#186393647586)
