Jacques Perrin (MICROCOSMOS) presents this dramatically beautiful documentary about bird migratory patterns, featuring breathtaking photography and hypnotic music. The film covers seven continents during four seasons, highlighting species both unique and common. From puffins in Iceland, whooper swans in Japan, bald eagles in Arizona, flamingos in Kenya, albatross in New Zealand, macaw in Peru, geese in Nepal, and plenty of cranes and storks in the director's native France, WINGED MIGRATION is literally a tour of the world from a bird's eye view. Filmed over the course of three year's time, the production for the movie was extensive to say the least. Using a crew of over 450 people broken up into five teams, new photographic techniques were invented specifically for the purpose of filming flocks of birds in flight. Balloon, helicopter, helicopter model, remote controlled glider, traditional glider, delta plane, and ultra-light motorized aircraft are the flying devices used to achieve the film's incredible camera angles. In fact, because birds were trained to be unafraid of the delta plane, photographers were able to fly alongside flocks, sometimes filming birds as they gazed into the camera's lens while also keeping in focus the dramatic landscape unfolding below. WINGED MIGRATION takes viewers on a unique journey soaring over the Earth as few films have ever done before.

Wonderful for People AND Cats
1st of all it's both extremely beautiful & totally fascinating. 2nd. my cat was also fascinated - batting at the screen & running behind the tv to see where all the birds were coming from. So, it's a good entertainment for him if he's housebound because of the rain or something. 3rdly, the images, the bird sounds & the music are positive & soothing. It's a dvd you can just have on in the background to make your home seem less empty -- whether you're home alone or have company.1st of all it's both extremely beautiful & totally fascinating. 2nd. my cat was also fascinated - batting at the screen & running behind the tv to see where all the birds were coming from. wonders of creation-a cinematic vista-23 species flying
Widescreen vista, accompanying from a bird's view within the flock of 23 species of mostly migratory birds around the world. The lighting of the frames and focus show the birds in flight in detail, most often as if flying along with them, and splendid ground vistas passing by below. The cinematography does not have extraneous noise, so the birds are what is prominently heard. Motorized aircraft are not heard, which raises the curiosity, how could they possibly film these shots? The additional material explains the techniques, the extensive crews and time to develop and shoot the film, and the conditioning and imprinting that made the novel film perspective possible. The somewhat out of context hunters shots seems a bit contrived and is reminescent of the statement Walt Disney ... The techniques to make the film, starting out with eggs, imprinting, conditioning, and then migratory flight shown and explained in the extra material, in no way detract from the natural beauty and marvel of the film capturing an impressive and apparently unobtrusive camera position from within the flock in flight. The introduction is heavy on unnecessary evolution pronouncements but that is unnecessary to the remainder of the film nor does the film rely on that theory to carry it. What carries the film is the actual groups of flying creatures from a perspective within the wing of birds in flight up close, and the marvelous cinematography of both birds and background, from locales around the world. Many scenes over land include still waters that reflect the sky, which is spectacular in this film, and adds additional marvel. The ocean, of course, is always restless with waves. The sound track compliments the view seamlessly, enhancing the viewing, and was never distracting in the film. The detail and length of the segments up so close to birds in flight, could be a study in the dynamic skeletal and musculature of bird flight, and feathers--someone in my past experience described in books laboriously, but would be clearly embodied by the close up views and perspective of this sampling of magnificent creatures in flight. This is as close to seeing and experiencing bird flight without any hint of man in immediacy, I have ever seen. The undulations of the birds bodies and the working of their wings is simply fascinating. The piece can be watched repeatedly without becoming tiresome--the creatures are that spectacular and natural appearing in their flight. The fly insert lists the birds as: Graylag Goose, Eurasian Crane, White Stork, Barnacle Goose, Whooper Swan, Bar-Headed Goose, Red-Crowned Crane, Bald Eagle, Canada Goose, Clark's Grebe, Sandhill Crane, Greater Sage Grouse, Common Mure, Northern Ganner, Artic Turn, Red-Breasted Goose, Waders, African White Pelican, The Amazon(a number of creatures--parrts being prominent), Albatross, Rckhopper Penquin, King Penquin, for nominally 23 kinds.

Resilience, Courage and Beauty
Accompanying flocks on part of their long migrations, the filmmakers give us a real "bird's eye view" from an ultralight plane. We see not only beautiful landscapes but also interaction between humans and birds, from the duck dying in the oil-polluted water and the sharp fall of ducks shot during their already arduous trip to the country dweller who built a nesting house onto his cottage to shelter the large stork which returns every year to his home. While it doesn't minimize the trials of birds' journeys of thousands of miles, it doesn't paint a picture as grim as it is today. Beautiful
I saw this on a cable movie channel and it was so totally awesome I had to have a copy so I could watch it again and again. And you start thinking, "How the heck did they film that?" Its mostly like the bird's view of migrating - It's unliean 'nature film" you have ever watched. Highly recommended.
