Enjoyable film with excellent dialogue, but mediocre production values.
This film chronicles the rise and fall of a Fusion band known as "Sweetwater" from Woodstock in the 1960s. The band was fronted by lead vocal Nansi Nevins. If you watch this movie from the actual tape rather than simply seeing it on TV and recording it, you'll see why the film wasn't originally released on DVD - the actual movie was recorded purely on videotape, and the production values show it. And of all the VH-1 films made, the editing with this one is the sloppiest; more than once, you can see that transitions from one cut to the next are over-trimmed and compacted a bit too much. That being said, the movie is still entertaining as a whole, although the second half of the film becomes increasingly morbid (at one point even becoming unwatchable). To be fair, the movie kind of warns you ahead of time that things will get grim, and the film's fantastic script really isn't to blame here. In fact, it's the movie's dialogue that keeps me watching this film again and again, and led me into buying the VHS. Moving on. The acting roles are a mixed bag; the performance of Nansi's sister is uneven, the 1990s Nansi is miscast, and there's no chemistry between her and the 1990s Alex. But the performance of the younger versions are mostly spot-on; Nansi, Rita, and Alex are especially notable. Those buying the movie simply to get deleted scenes from the film will be disappointed - Every minute of movie you see here is comparable to the version aired on TV; there's no additional material whatsoever - not even the movie trailer or behind-the-scenes video. It might be worth it to get this tape for a good quality copy of the movie, but if you already recorded it when it played on TV, the VHS version you get here really won't offer anything new.
