À propos de ce produit

Product Information

Celebrated painter and filmmaker Julian Schnabel's third feature finds him reaching new artistic heights with this audacious and personal biopic, based on the best-selling memoir of the same name. The film tells the remarkable tale of Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric), the world-renowned editor of French ELLE magazine, who suffered a stroke and was paralyzed by the inexplicable "locked in" syndrome at the age of 43. Bauby's only way of communicating with the outside world was by blinking with one eye, and after several dedicated helpers--a string of impossibly beautiful women (Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josee Croze, Olatz Lopez Garamendia, Anne Consigny)--helped him to speak through this seemingly irrelevant gesture, he began to produce the words that would form his memoir. Along the way, as he swam in and out of consciousness, memories from his past swelled into the present, resulting in a cinematic experience that is at once heartbreaking and hopeful. Schnabel somehow manages to convey Bauby's internal life with remarkable clarity, employing first-person perspective, striking cinematography (by the always great Janusz Kaminski), and Amalric's pained, life-affirming monologues. The result is a wholly original experience, a painful and tender portrait of a life that is made all the more exhilarating because of its close proximity to death.

  • Diving Bell & The Butterfly

This movie stayed with me for a long time after I watched it. I was in nursing school at the time and had never known of anyone with locked-in syndrome. The courage this man had was unbelievable. I researched his life after watching the movie and found that the film was for the most part very realistic, and the actor who plays the part of Jean-Do really 'became' him--Bauby's wife and children even said that they could see Jean-Do in his face, his eyes, the way he spoke. I highly recommend the movie as not only a beautifully filmed depiction of a very courageous and inspirational man, but as something you will remember for the rest of your life.

  • Human Potential is Truly Awesome

This excellent movie by an artist turned director, is sure to fascinate and even astound. It is the true story of M. Bauby who at the time was the general editor of the French fashion magazine Elle. By accounts he lived a good life - all the pleasures that wealth and fame can bring. Suddenly he was stricken by total paralysis brought on by a cerebral stroke. A gifted, vital man was confined to a wheelchair unable to move anything but his one eye, and this for the rest of his life with little or no hope of any recovery. The story is told from his viewpoint with great sensitivity and a wondrous insight into his inner worlds, for though paralyzed, he could communicate by blinking (as a language code) his feelings and his thoughts. In this tragic state he wrote a book of the same title ...

  • An essential movie

This is a heart-wrenching movie that everybody should see. We tend all too easily to complain abour our daily life, and this movie offers a perspective that is both sobering and encouraging. It raises many questions, from the more fundamental "what do we live for?" to the more subtle question of personal responsibility (is the main character responsible for his friend's imprisonmenr in a Beirut cell because he left him his seat on a plane that was later hijacked? If not, why did he never have the guts to call him back after he was freed? This question of courage comes back later in the movie, as his ex-mistress calls him - a terrible moment in the movie as his wife has to be the interpreter, and obviously suffers as he asks his mistress to visit him - to tell him she never ...

  • Love the movie, read the book!

This story is a gift from the remarkably talented man who lived it. Jean-Dominique Bauby could have spent his last months hiding in the body that locked him inside, but instead he wrote a beautiful book. The effort was so great that editing it the way writers ordinarily write would have been impossible, so he edited it in his head and made the first draft perfect. Most of us would have missed this gift if Julian Schnabel had not taken up the baton and made this beautiful film. If foreign films are foreign to you, don't worry. You'll get used to the subtitles. Go for it. Unwrap this gift. If you get it, you will find your own grace through this gem of a film. After that, you might want to read the book.

  • Inundated in a Tsunami of emotions and images

When I first started watching this DVD I had accidentally started with the behind the scenes special features section. The Director was explaining the reasons behind many of the scenes, props, and interior motivations needed by the actors and how he, the director wanted us, the viewers, to see the film through the eyes of the actor playing the main character. This effort by the filmmaker and everyone involved with the making of this film only helped to make the magic that unfolded scene by scene beat by beat, even more intense. This film is in the vanguard of the new new wave of French film makers. One of the most caring, thought provoking imaginative films of the new century. A true work of art in every sense. A must see film for all.
