John Sturges's remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 classic THE SEVEN SAMURAI has become an influential film in its own right. A small Mexican village that makes involuntary donations of its harvest to a gang of bandits led by Calvera (Eli Wallach) decides to hire a group of professional gunmen, headed by gunslinger-for-hire Chris (Yul Brynner), to protect them. Despite the meager pay, Chris and Vin (Steve McQueen) sign on after the Mexicans see them confront some racist thugs. As they ride to the village, Chris picks up some other gunmen, including Bernardo (Charles Bronson), Lee (Robert Vaughan), Britt (James Coburn), Harry (Brad Dexter), and aspiring gunslinger Chico (Horst Buchholz). The Mexicans, who are at first ambivalent about having gunmen hanging around their town, finally let down their guard and allow their visitors to teach them how to shoot and how to reconfigure the town to defend against Calvera. When the bandits return, they find harvesting the crops a little more challenging. This rousing, perfectly cast action film launched the careers of Bronson, McQueen, and Coburn. It also benefits tremendously from the unforgettably polyrhythmic score by Elmer Bernstein, among the most famous in film history. So popular was the film's theme that it was used to sell Marlboro cigarettes for years afterward.

Fed up with being brutalized and impoverished because of outlaw raids on their village by a merciless outlaw leader - played by Eli Wallach ( The Holiday, The Hunter, The Misfits, Genghis Khan, etc), the besieged citizens of a small Mexican town hire seven American gunslingers to stave off the marauders once and for all. Yul Brynner (Westworld, Catlou, Cast a Giant Shadow, The King and I, etc) leads the band of mercenaries which includes several other big stars of the time or of later years including Steven McQueen (Tom Horn, The Great Escape, Bullitt, The Sand Pebbles, etc); Charles Bronson (Breakheart Pass, Death Wish, Mr. Majestyk, The Mechanic, etc); James Coburn and Robert Vaughn. The seven mercenaries make bullets and powder the reward for the bandits when they ... This movie was nominated for an academy award in 1960 for Best Movie and Best Actor--and the movie has long ago gained classic western status. Most Western lover will certainly enjoy this one a great deal and will get a full night of entertainment out of it--even if you have saw it before.

An enduring classic among classic westerns, The Magnificent Seven presents one of filmdom's coolest 'man in black' heroes in Yul Brynner along with his gang of soon-to-be movie stars including Steve McQueen, James Coburn and Charles Bronson as well as future 'Man From U.N.C.L.E.' Robert Vaughan. It's full of vintage tough guy posturing, plenty of chest thumpin' and shootin' as the heroes help the poor and downtrodden villagers defend themselves against a gang of swarthy ruffians led by Eli Wallach. The Collector's Edition DVD special features are numerous for the movie buff including behind-the-scenes photos and reminiscences by Eli Wallach and (then)surviving members of the Seven, Coburn and Vaughan, Brad Dexter and Horst Bucholz. The Magnificent Seven
For fans of westerns, this is a very good movie. For some reason, it has never struck me as great or as good as The Searchers, Shane or any of the other "Great Westerns". I find now, as when I first watched it years ago, Yul Byrnner miss-cast and too unbelievable. The other characters fit pretty good for their respective roles. Coburn quoted this film as his breakout film, but watch him in his first western(film), Ride Lonesome, and you will see his star potential a whole year earlier. I can watch this film every once in awhile, mostly to see Eli Wallach and Steve McQueen.For fans of westerns, this is a very good movie. This movie changed her life
I met a woman named Renee who recommended I see this movie. Renee was a staunch supporter of the United States Constitution and she never knew how long she would have to work for her freedom. Renee spent three years of her life as a victim of the twentieth century’s first forced labor camp in Mexico City. After her escape, she moved to Los Angeles. It was here that she heard of The Magnificent Seven. Renee needed hope. And the promotional billboards for this classic film seemed to line almost every busy street in LA. This experience truly spoke to her. Renee decided it was time to procure a ticket to see this controversial film and happened to find herself sitting next to Steve McQueen himself in the movie theater. They laughed a little, but mainly due to Steve McQueen ... I met a woman named Renee who recommended I see this movie. The ORIGINAL Magnificent Seven movie I tried to acquire for the longest time, not the "new, improved" flick, which, sadly, I already bought, based on the same old screenplay bankrupt Hollowwood, apparently running out of fresh ideas tried to sell again on the long coattails of the first, star-studded motion picture.
