Writer-director Angela Robinson expands a short film she showed at Sundance into this tongue-in-cheek feature, which is a satire of female spy flicks like CHARLIE'S ANGELS. The plot revolves around four sexy coeds handpicked to work at an exclusive spy academy on the basis of their S.A.T. scores and their superior ability to lie, cheat, steal, and kill. The squad consists of feisty team-leader Max (Meagan Good), goodie-goodie Janet (Jill Ritchie), apathetic chain-smoker Dominique (Devon Aoki), and sweet-natured Amy (Sara Foster)--who wonders if being a spy is truly her destiny. Decked out in ultra-mini plaid skirts, the D.E.B.S. (stands for Discipline, Energy, Beauty, and Strength) prepare for their most important mission yet--capturing the deadly criminal mastermind Lucy Diamond (Jordana Brewster). As it turns out, Lucy is little more than a helpless romantic, and when a crush develops between Lucy and Amy, the plot takes yet another twist.Over-the-top and self-referential, D.E.B.S. pokes fun at the CHARLIE'S ANGELS formula in a good-natured way, ultimately succeeding by not taking itself too seriously. Walking a thin line between parodying and emulating the genre, D.E.B.S. depends on the same aesthetic that it spoofs. In fact the only thing that truly distinguishes D.E.B.S. from films like CHARLIE'S ANGELS is that its core romance is a lesbian one. Luckily, this relationship is developed more fully than that of other action films, and is not sensationalized. A mood-appropriate 1980s soundtrack features Erasure, The Cure, and New Order.

Funny, Sexy D.E.B.S.
A clever parody of teen-hero movies such as "Agent Cody Banks", women spies & various anime characters. It was entertaining, funny and the leads are both gorgeous and talented. While the story is over-the-top, that's to be expected. And the cast played it straight which, for me, heightens the humor. The seduction & later love scene are handled well. The beautiful Jordana Brewster and Sara Foster were believable as the star-crossed lovers who finally set aside their pasts to be together. The supporting cast, including Holland Taylor and Michael Clark Duncan, were well-cast. The action scenes, while few for a spy genre movie, were pretty well-choreographed and set the tone for the initial antipathy between Amy and Lucy. All in all, a fun romp with a great cast. I was curious to see this film because it was featured on the previews of another dvd I bought and produced by the same person. I wasn't sure what to make of "D.E.B.S." initially. The plot is somewhat futuristic, about a group school girls unlike "Charlie's Angels" in many respects, who fight for what is good and battle against evil. The main reason I bought it was because it was produced by Andrea Sperling, the same woman who produced "Itty Bitty Titty Committee." Having loved "Itty Bitty", I figured "D.E.B.S." would be along similar wavelengths - and it was. The same lesbian element is raised in both films, but in "D.E.B.S.", the good guy falls for the bad guy and risks her reputation and relationship with her friends (fellow D.E.B.S.) by doing so. Perhaps this was the intention of the writer (Angela Robinson) and producers from the outset, but I found it conflicted with my overall enjoyment of the film at times. Overall, not a bad film though, and definitely one to add to your collection if you love lesbian features.

Cute flick with little spice. Loved the casting. But what's with the plad micro-skirts???? Makes the characters look more like sex fantasy objects than spies. I think the film appeals more to the young male wanting to see school girls in mini skirts carrying unrealistic looking guns and kissing. I also think gay folks could find this film weird. But hey, check the love scenes for they do have some chemistry. For the rest of the film, the viewer should focus on the pop-corn and side chat. Summing up: Don't expect much from the plot, enjoy the music and the beautiful girls and you should be fine. I got this film as a collectible for it's ground braking stand to promote young lesbian love on this Sony PG-13 flick.Cute flick with little spice. Loved the casting. Chessy yet fun. Don't spend much for it.
A chessy, low budget, unrealistic spin on a spy movie. But you get involved with the characters and ignore the many faults.
