2016 release. Santana IV is the 23rd studio album by Santana and the fourth album by almost the entire Woodstock-era classic lineup. The album reunites the early 1970s classic lineup of Carlos Santana, Gregg Rolie, Neal Schon, Mike Carabello and Michael Shrieve and marks the first time in 45 years - since 1971's multi-platinum classic Santana III - that the quintet has recorded together. Joining the core Santana IV band in the studio are current Santana members Karl Perazzo (percussion) and Benny Rietveld (bass), with vocalist Ronald Isley guesting on two cuts. The origins for the reunion go back several years, when Schon suggested that he and Carlos Santana record together. Santana liked the idea but went one better, proposing that they recruit Rolie, Shrieve and Carabello for what would be called Santana IV. After initial writing sessions and rehearsals took place in 2013, the group recorded throughout 2014 and 2015, amassing 16 new tracks that combined all their signature elements - Afro-Latin rhythms, soaring vocals, electrifying blues-psychedelic guitar solos, and irrepressible jubilant percussion work. About the Santana IV team, Santana stated: "It was magical, we didn't have to try to force the vibe - it was immense. From there, we then needed to come up with a balance of songs and jams that people would immediately identify as Santana."

    Santana again

    Time passes. What was new becomes old. This music is old and tired. It shows that great players don't necessarily make great music. I was around for the inception of the original band. This album proves what a genius Glen Kolotkin is. This album is muddy and unfocused and the energy just isn't what it used to be. Props to these guys for trying, but they missed the mark - they also miss David Brown and Chepito.

    Not the Santana I remember

    I had the great pleasure of hearing the original Santana band back in 1969, right when there first album came out. It was great, I really could not believe what I was hearing and seeing. The new album, claiming to be the the original Santana band is not true, two of the original members of the band are not on the album, I do not know if this would have made a difference, but this album sounds nothing like the first three. The Santana magic is gone, this album could have been recorded by total unknowns, and still sound the same. What a disappointment.

    Santana IV, 2016

    Sounds like original Santana but an even improved version of the original band, with ex-Santana member guitarist Neil Schon reunited as well. Not as much all out jamming as the old albums but a great mix of afro-latin infused blues rock, hard rock, and psychedelic style guitar solos to satisfy classic rock lovers. They also sound like better musicians, play with enthusiasm, and dont sound a day over 30... excellent album. The cd product was wrapped, brand new, and plays without imperfection.

    Great addition to the Santana catalog

    This is not a blockbuster record that will catapult the band back into international acclaim. Its a few long time friends and musicians getting together again and proving that the past can be put aside and something new can be created. There is some excellent music here,...a few good songs and a couple of filler tracks. All in all a solid B effort. For Santana freaks like myself i was happy to see Carlos, Michael Shrieve, Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon together again. It reaffirms my faith that any obstacle can be overcome w/ respect for one another and, a belief that the past can be put aside and the Santana legacy continues on w/ new music from this band.

    Not Santana III by a long shot

    Santana iV did not live up to the hype. Instrumentals were good, excellent guitar riffs by Neal Schon and Carlos but the lyrics were terrible and also the vocals were not up to par, Alex Ligertwood was missing on the vocals but there was no saving the lyrics. Save your money and buy one of the Santana classic lps.
