If you own a Saturn and you don't have this game...
If you love you some bullet hell, this game is worth every dime. This is a great next step in the Darius series if you were a fan of Darius Twin. The colour palette is bright and captivating. The power up system gives you an jenga like experience as you try to reach overpowered status without the fruits of your efforts being stolen away. There is variability in the level selection; leavding way to tons of re-playability. The game is 1 or 2 player, and plays like an arcade cab in that aspect. Also, the soundtrack for this game is amazing! I wasn't expecting it to be as damn catchy as it was; if you're a fan of the Fifth Element soundtrack, then you're gonna like this. Don't judge the book by its cover
Don't be fooled by the Acclaim logo, packaging, and price. After trying out the game, you will be suprised to find out that Darius Gaiden is actually one of the best 2D shooters for the US Sega Saturn. Darius Gaiden was an arcade title released by Taito in Japan back in 1994/95. This game features excellent graphics and gameplay of its time. It also supports 2 players. Like other Darius games, you will get to choose different path to reach your final destination (I think 8 of them). Each final stage features a different final bosses and a different ending, so the replay value is high. The graphics is great- use the bomb to release a black hole to suck small enemies and every single bullet on the screen away. I actually think the music is excellent. All stage bosses and final bosses ... Don't be fooled by the Acclaim logo, packaging, and price. You will get a perfect arcade translation of Darius Gaiden. The playstation version has many slowdown so stay away from that.

Great Fun! Get Your Turbo Ready! Are You Experienced?
This is what shooter junkies crave! insane amounts of on screen enemies, bullets, flashy things, plenty of upgrades for things that go boom, with a psychadelic state of mind! Great Feel Great Soundtrack and Effects Great Level and Enemy Design Great Bosses Great Multiplayer Great Experience interesting bit is that there are branching pathways for the levels which you can choose from to get to 1 of 8 different bosses. the 7 sub-bosses for each of the 7 tiers it takes to get to the final boss are the same design no matter which branch you take, a different one for each tier. Heres the twist... they are all Ocean creature Mecha! But each of the 26 levels has differnt look and at least one new class of enemy. They aren't too long. enough to give you a good flavor of its own then get you on ... This is what shooter junkies crave! insane amounts of on screen enemies, bullets, flashy things, plenty of upgrades for things that go boom, with a psychadelic state of mind! CAUTION: this game is not for the meek. you will not survive! though a perfect playthrough to one of the 8 bosses only takes 30 min you will not have a perfect playthrough or anywheres close! i am using a virtuastick with turbos and a Action Replay cart as it has cheats for the US version. so using all cheats enabled i was able to play through in 30 min. this makes it fun and possible to see the insane amount of variety and detail in the game design. Then you can go back and turn off the cheats one by one if you want to prove to yourself you can make it. but bear in mind the game has 3 levels of difficulty built in, it knows its tough!

Great game! Worth the money!
Darius Gaiden is one of the best shmups on the Saturn. Tonnes of replay, fantastic graphics and an amazing soundtrack push this to the front of the pack. It may be less known than Radiant Silvergun but just as good, if not better.

One of the best SHMUPS of all time
This is an incredible game and a hidden gem. If you have a Sega Saturn, you gotta have this game (consider getting the JPN import as all the text is in English and it is cheaper). This game is hard initially (even on Easy mode), but stick with it. As you start to figure out the patterns of the levels you will master this game and you will be proud when you beat it. The boss battles are what this game is all about and if you can make it to the boss with heavy power-ups, you'll emerge victorious. The final bosses are all amazing and worth exploring each path through the game. Have fun!This is an incredible game and a hidden gem.
