GO FOR BROKE FOR A NEW GENERATION
For those of you who are not familiar with the relocation of japanese americans during the second world war, this movie gives a fairly good depiction of how life was for many Japanese Americans during that era in american history. I am a third generation Japanese American (sansei) who never lived through this part of american injustice, however I have heard stories from my parents who both lived through relocation at Hear Mountain, WY and Poston, AZ. The movie does do a very good job of trying to explain what happened and the process of uprooting all these people to other parts of the country just because they the same ethnic background as the enemy during the war. The depiction of what many second generation Japanese Americans (nisei) called "camp" was quite good considering ... Alot of music was one thing that set this movie apart from other movies about "camp". I had the opportunity to watch this movie with my mother and mother-in-law who both lived through this. They both agreed that the music was one thing that really brought back alot of memories. The mentioning of the 442nd regiment was very fitting and shows just how much the "Nisei" were American by not just serving their country but to die for their country. Over 9000 lost their lives serving in the european theater during WWII. The actual saying "Go for broke" is a hawaiian term but means the same for everyone. Shoot the works. But the one thing about "camp" life was baseball, and that help make life in "camp" worth living. It was one thing that brought everyone together and get out and have fun behind barbed wire fences. The one big reason I bought the movie was more for my mother and mother-in-law to see it and be able to share a memory back in time they could relate to. I also bought it to show my kids something about history that their grandparents lived through and understand what the United States government did to people of Japanese American heritage despite no known records of spying was done by any of them. The loyalty of the Japanese Americans in military service is still recognized for the highest percentage of dead and wounded in history. Something to remember.

America's Pastime
I enjoy WWII movies, and this one dealt with one aspect of WWII that we don't hear too much about ... the Japanese Americans interred in camps during that time. It had an interesting love story. It showed the courage and determination of this father to bring as much civility and sense of normalcy that could be mustered in that type of situation.
