Product Information

NATIONAL BESTSELLER - "An incredibly gripping, moving, and literate work of art, rarely does an author manage to re-create a moment in history with such mastery, authority, and psychological insight."--Nelson DeMille At Thermopylae, a rocky mountain pass in northern Greece, the feared and admired Spartan soldiers stood three hundred strong. Theirs was a suicide mission, to hold the pass against the invading millions of the mighty Persian army. Day after bloody day they withstood the terrible onslaught, buying time for the Greeks to rally their forces. Born into a cult of spiritual courage, physical endurance, and unmatched battle skill, the Spartans would be remembered for the greatest military stand in history--one that would not end until the rocks were awash with blood, leaving only one gravely injured Spartan squire to tell the tale. . . . "A novel that is intricate and arresting and, once begun, almost impossible to put down."-- Daily News "A timeless epic of man and war . . . Pressfield has created a new classic deserving a place beside the very best of the old."--Stephen Coonts

  • One of the greatest books you'll ever read.

I bought this copy to add to my book collection. I'm an avid reader and lean more towards military and military history. I'm a career soldier (with two Iraq tours under my belt and a third coming up) so I tend to study my craft. This book was introduced to me by a soldier whose background was in Long Range Surveillance, and he couldn't praise it enough. He loaned me his copy (which was rather worn) and said it was his second copy because the first one had worn out from him lending it to his soldiers so often. It was everything he proclaimed and more. It's the sort of book you don't want to end, and that is a rare book indeed. Gates of Fire, in my opinion, belongs in the must read category for any soldier or any person interested in military culture. I ...

  • This book is one of the best novels I have ever read.

The book is at once a compelling story, a fantastic history lesson, a gripping drama, and a beautiful glimpse at humanity. By reading this historical novel you will learn a TON of truthful information about the culture, tactics, and character of the ancient Spartans. However, the story is so engrossing and the real-life events so dramatic that you will never realize how much you learned until the end. I cannot recommend a book more highly.

  • Like 1st person account

This book is written so well you swear it's a 1st person account of living during that time and the events of the spartan battle of Thermopylae against the Persians. You experience it all. One of the best books ever written!
