As Germany was threatening to become the world's most powerful nation, it became clear that England would have to act to save Europe from the Nazi threat. Winston Churchill is widely recognized as the man who led England in this charge, but the prominent politician and energizing speaker had to pull himself up from a low point to lead his compatriots. Churchill was in the midst of a marital crisis, had lost his family fortune, and was struggling through a morbid depression. Battling his own demons, he was able to stand up and loudly warn about the Nazi party's intentions and actions. This made-for-cable feature stars Albert Finney as the defiant Churchill, remaking a 1974 film of the same name starring Richard Burton.

Director Richard Loncraine's & screenplay writers' Larry Ramin's & Hugh Whitemore's (2002) mini-series version of, "The Gathering Storm," is a biopic of Sir Winston Churchill's (Albert Finney) & Clementine Churchill's (Vanessa Redgrave) marriage during the extremely turbulent period in the UK from 1934 to 1939. It is based on Sir Churchill's 9 volume biography. Churchill's account of Hitler's relentless conquests & Stanley Baldwin's (Derek Jacobi) "peace at any price" government, burying Britain's head in the sand, by deploying nefarious strategies to prevent Churchill from informing the public, makes a historical point. Baldwin, far more than Neville Chamberlain, was responsible for ... In Parliament, Churchill's also making his best speeches trying to keep England from factionlizing. Baldwin resigns after Hitler invades the Rhineland. After the Nazi's attack Poland, Chamberlain appoints Churchill First Lord of the Admiralty. Here's an example of the tight script of Churchill's return to public office: Winston Churchill (Albert Finney): I'm the new First Lord. Military Guard (Russell Barr): We know, sir. Churchill: How do you know? Guard: A signal was sent to the fleet this afternoon, Sir. Churchill: What signal? Guard: Winston is back. Churchill: [chuckles] He bloody well is! The sub-plot between Ralph Wigram (Linus Roache) & Churchill is fascinating. Wigram risks his seniority in the Foreign Office to supply Churchill with classified intelligence reports. Like Churchill, Wigram was certain that the Nazi's were preparing for an international war. Churchill (Finney): There may be a war. I grant you that. Nevertheless we shall win. Ralph Wigram (Roache): How can you say that? It's just mindless optimism. Churchill: [nods no] When I was at school, I had a friend called Merlind Evans. One day we were talking about what we would do when we were grown up. I don't know why I said this, or, why I thought it, but I said, "One day in the future, Britain will be in great danger & it will fall to me to save London & the Empire." Wigram: Schoolboy fantasy. I wanted to play for England or climb Everest. Churchill: [half nod no] My destiny & I truly believe it. Wigram: You're an extraordinary man, Winston. Churchill: I am, I know it. Wigram: Nobody but you could say that sort of thing & expect people to believe it. Churchill: Destiny is what I believe in. Destiny commands. We must obey. It's "Prime Minister Churchill," only 7 months later! "The Gathering Storm's" (2002) Churchill (Finney) gives a multi-faceted view of one of England's most influential diplomats. He's a jealous husband when his wife, Clemmie (Redgrave), travels with another man; a disempowered politician (for a while) who rises to the occasion to become one of the most passionately outspoken of Hitler's adversaries. His artistic bent on painting is depicted as a therapeutic diversion from depression. His close relationship to Clemmie is very well developed as the central focus of the movie: a portrait of a marriage that's a love story as much about the woman beside the man who encouraged his emergence as a political leader to heroic stature.

Early on, Churchill correctly identified the emerging Nazi threat and struggled to make his nation and the world aware of it. Weary of war and fearful of provoking another, his government ignored his warnings and actively suppressed information that would have supported his views until it was too late. Politically, this was a very difficult period for Churchill and his pain and courage are well portrayed. Albert Finney and Vanessa Redgrave give fine performances as Winston and Clemmie Churchill.A dramatization of the period in Churchill's life and career covered in the first volume of his World War II memoir. The Gathering Storm
Albery Finney was Winston Churchill! He was excellent in the role! As a WSC historian, this movie covers his wilderness years and his step back into a leadership role as a voice to encourage England to prepare for meeting Hitler's war plans. Great movie.
