Hell's Angels, By Howard Hughes
It is what it is; a stiffly acted 1930's flick with the first-time director-producer's theatrically underwhelming squeeze in a major role, albeit, it is The Jean Harlow. But the air combat scenes are worth putting up with the dated acting. Not for their cinematic effect, but because they are a film record of some great early pilots doing some incredible things with early aviation technology, and with reasonably good cinematography commemorating it. Compare Flyboys, with its state-of-the-art computer generated effects, discount its lamer story against Hell's Angel's dated acting, and ask yourself "who has lived in the golden age of cinema?". P.S. The scene at the end, where the older brother resolves his duty to his comrades and his country, his love for ... Howard Hughes' HELL'S ANGEL'S
This is a very difficult movie to review. The first half of the movies is terrible. Horrible story and acting. The writing and acting reminds me of Ed Wood. The second half is wonderful with World War One aerial combat and ground explosions. The story and acting picks up and you are left with a much better movie than you watched during the first hour. Jean Harlow does a fine acting job in the first hour; the only bright spot. So if you are prepared to suffer through the first half of the movie you will certainly enjoy the second half. It is up to you if it is worth it. On a scale of 10 one being the worst and ten being the best I would give this film a 6. 1 for the first half and 5 for the second half. A good slice of the era.
Very good special effects and blending of live action with them, considering it was made 87 years ago. The movie is more than just entertainment - It also illustrates some human flaws and virtues which give pause for thought, if you will. The fact that Hughes spared no expense to re-make it with audio, and built up his own 'Air Force' of WW1 planes and pilots for the movie, speaks for his character and determination to create excellence. Great movie with lots of aerial action!
This is a must-see if you are either a fan of aviation or groundbreaking movies. Howard Hughes is a forgotten director in modern times and we owe a lot to him as movie fans!
