The troubled soul finally settles down with a good woman (Shirley Jones) but then gets stabbed to death while committing a robbery. Many years later, an angel offers the roustabout the chance to return to earth for just one day to makes things right for his unhappy wife and the daughter he never had the chance to meet. Based on the French play LILION by Ferene Molnar, CAROUSEL ranks among the better Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, making it a classic by any standard. To boot, the film's tale of love between Bigelow and wife Julie rivals that of any other 1950s musical. Songs from the outstanding score include "If I Loved You," "June Is Busting Out All Over," and "You'll Never Walk Alone."

A Classic Gem
Carousel shows that bad choices can lead to severe consequences. Wonderful musical, join a star eye girl and a man who works the Carousel fall in love, only the man decides money is the most important thing. Especially when a new member of the family will be joining them soon. What will happen will temptation win? What happens to these two people? A happy ever after or a moment of happiness?

Carousel remembered
In its day this was an acceptable recording of an iconic Broadway musical. This version has not aged well. The Cinemascope format does not work on television screens. Except for Shirley Jones, the cast is not suited to their parts. It is a waste of money.

I Love This Movie
This was one of the iconic movies from my childhood. It was based on a play by the Hungarian Ferenc Molnar, called "Liliom," which means "tough guy" in Hungarian. The view of what Heaven is like, the struggles of the characters, the songs and the romance all appeal to me. Watching it again, I was reminded of all I loved about this movie when I was a child.

Very Enjoyable musical movie, with a slightly "dark" sub-plot
I bought this item because I thought my 92 year old mother-in-law would enjoy a R&H musical movie. I own this title as part of a 6 volume VHS set of R&H musicals. My mother-in-law doesn't have equipment to play VHS tapes any longer. I have enjoyed watching it again after several years since viewing it last. One reviewer says "this movie is a bit dark" in that part of the story is Billy Bigelow gets stabbed to death while attempting to rob another man to provide for his wife and unborn child. There are some musical numbers in this movie I really enjoy: This was a Real Nice Clambake, I'm Just a Girl Who Can't Say No, and You'll Never Walk Alone. I found sheet music for You'll Never Walk Alone in the high school band room and I learned it enough to perform it in a Spring concert. It was many ... That may be true, but it is still enjoyable and for a weary soul, a wonderful balm - music is good for the soul. Actually, the story isn't bad either. It's simplistic and set in a different time than we live in now - boy meets girl; boy's boss doesn't approve and boy gets fired; girl gets fired from her job because is not going to return to mill housing until way after curfew; girl gets pregnant; a lot of people attend a clambake and when they return, boy tries to rob a man to provide for his family; boy gets stabbed during robbery and dies. Boy gets chance to return to Earth for one day to try and fix some problem with the family back on Earth. Most of the story is told in one long "flashback", ending with the unborn child graduating from high school. Then, Billy goes back to his life of "star maintenance" and movie ends.

LIKE GREETING AN OLD FRIEND!
This was my all-time favorite musical since childhood when I first saw it televised. Such a great story and wonderful actor/singers. Gives you hope for mankind.
