The Fifth Doctor's first adventure, though not his best
The premier episode of the 1982 season of Doctor Who, Castrovalva also is the first episode featuring Peter Davison as the Doctor (well, doing more than randomly smiling, anyhow). It's also the final serial in a three-part-storyline that features the return of the Master and the changing of the torch in terms of actors playing the Doctor. Castrovalva starts up right where Logopolis left off, with Tegan, Nyssa and Adric desperately trying to get the Doctor back to the TARDIS so he can finish up his regeneration safely. However, Adric is captured by the Master, and it seems like his own regeneration is beginning to fail! With the Master in hot pursuit, the Doctor and his remaining companions set for Castrovalva, supposedly a place of rest and relaxation. However, things seem awry, as there ... The premier episode of the 1982 season of Doctor Who, Castrovalva also is the first episode featuring Peter Davison as the Doctor (well, doing more than randomly smiling, anyhow). And can the Doctor and his companions escape with their lives? The writing for this adventure is pretty solid. The concept of a living Escher painting (upon which this episode is named for) is one that is of sheer genius, and the acting is also top-notch for the era. Peter Davison in particular has a shining role here, not only as the Fifth Doctor, but also imitating the first, second, third and even fourth Doctors as his regeneration begins to fail on him. While this bit is depressingly short, the mystery of Castrovalva and watching the Doctor figure things out is a real joy - especially for those who like having the Doctor not know everything. As a side-note, it should be said that this adventure was actually filmed about fourth for the season to let Davison get acclimated to the role and figure out how he wanted to play the Doctor. This premier episode seriously improves from that, though the dip in quality for the next few episodes is unfortunate. Rounding out this release is a glut of special features. Audio commentary from Peter Davison (the Doctor), Janet Fielding (Tegan), Matthew Waterhouse (Adric), writer Chris Bidmead and the director Fiona Cumming make re-watching Castrovalva a real treat, and almost an hour of bonus videos and interviews also accompany the release. Of particular interest is the 11-minute interview with Peter Davison on how he approached the role at first, and a second special look back on the companions the Doctor has gained for this adventure (and later ones). While some may not like Castrovalva in general, and I can see why, I personally enjoyed this release. The bonus features really made the purchase worthwhile, but I probably would have bought it without them. If you're a Who fan, you've probably already got it, but there's no harm in showing it off to your math-minded friends.

"Castovalva" was the much anticipated debut of the fifth Doctor, Peter Davidson. Although he had to fill Tom Baker's big shoes, I admit I've always liked Davidson's performance as the Doctor. He is the most realistic of all the Doctor's. Sadly, his debut story is less than spectacular. It is so slow paced and the script is weak. The good point's are the performances of Davison and Anthony Ainley as the evil Master. I would buy it for the special features alone, because I'm a die hard fan. However, I wouldn't reccomend this as an introduction to the fifth Doctor. I would start with "Earthshock" or "Ressurection of the Daleks," which are the best of the Davidson era, and if you get hooked on those, go back and get "Castrovalva.""Castovalva" was the much anticipated debut of the fifth Doctor, Peter Davidson. Unable to view disc.
This is the third out of 6 Doctor Who DVDs I've purchased that my DVD player can't read. One was still factory sealed. I'm beginning to believe that 2 | Entertain makes flawed discs
