Product Information

Jack Lemmon stars as Walter Armbruster in Wilder's leisurely romantic comedy set on the idyllic Mediterranean. When his father dies in a car crash on the isle of Ischia, the corporate executive quickly is on a plane. Once there, he learns from Pamela Piggott (Juliet Mills), a young Brit, that her mother, who was his father's mistress, was also killed. To make matter worse, bureaucratic rules prevent the release of the bodies for a few days. Not long after, both bodies are stolen from the morgue, and thieves are revealed to be an eccentric family of Italian vintners, who hold the corpses hostage until they are paid for the damage caused to their vineyard by the car crash. After reluctantly paying up, the irritable Walter returns to the hotel, where he even more reluctantly joins the free-spirited Pamela for a night of skinny-dipping. When a porter who attempts to blackmail the naked couple and is shot by his angry, very pregnant girlfriend, the hotel manager Carlucci (Clive Revill) is forced to put Walter and Pamela into the same room, while the murder investigation proceeds. Neither of them regrets his decision. A relaxed, sardonic comedy, juxtaposing the uptight American with the laid back European, it makes many of the same points about the excesses of American life as his earlier films in a far more mellow style.

Enjoyable Wilder Film with Strong Performances
Avanti! (1972) is a very good romantic Billy Wilder film starring Jack Lemmon and Juliet Mills as the children of two lovers killed in a car crash in Italy. Neither Lemmon nor Mills knew her mother and his father were having an affair for many years during trips to an elite Italian hotel. When they meet to have their parents' bodies shipped home, romance develops between them as well, and they engage in many of their parents' favorite activities at the hotel. Wilder and long-time writing partner I.A.L. Diamond have crafted a great adaptation of Samuel Taylor's play, mixing just the right amount of drama with comedy and writing a script that allows two excellent actors, Mills and Lemmon, to carry the story and keep the audience involved. As always with Wilder's films, we have much ... Avanti! Lemmon's and Mills' characters must reconcile the magic and beauty of life at the Italian resort with the harsh demands of business, government, and everyday life at home. What this all adds up to is a great film. I recommend this film to everyone who appreciates quality filmmaking and acting. If you like Avanti!, also check out Wilder's Oscar-winning picture The Apartment (1960), which also stars Lemmon, is cowritten by I.A.L. Diamond, and is excellent.

You have to love Jack Lemmon!! Really enjoyed this film. Bought one for a friend as well. Promptly shipped, great price.

Avanti! is good--
--but not great. There are overreaching sections, improbable gives way to impossible, farce and cute snippishness takes the place of logic, but overall this is enjoyable, interesting, and quaint. It was a long time ago, things were different, and the way this was handled was top notch for its day. Avanti! is still good, but like an antique car, it holds up best if you compare it against other creations of the same time. .--but not great. Great gift!
Bought this as a birthday present and had to give it 5 stars (I personally haven't watched it but want to now) the person I bought it for absolutely loved it and I totally trust their judgement, so 5 stars it is, plus you can't go wrong with Jack Lemon and Juliet Mills.....

Character actors make this one and Jack Lemmon is always good
Humorous movie with two great actors supported by some interesting funny characters in beautiful Italy. There is a scene not for kids when they start swimming in the ocean.
