Great "Haunting" classic.
Probably a lot of people have never seen this movie. It is a great classic haunting movie with an unexpected twist. Nothing like the new "Changeling". Totally different story line. Though it is years old.....well done and great actors (George C. Scott). If you like haunted type movies, you'll love this one.

A "Giant's Shoulders" in scary movies
Excellent supernatural story telling with just as excellent acting. No using gore or shock as a crutch to compensate for absence of talent in writing or directing. Younger horror directors and writers need to watch this before their next project.

Gothic horror masterpiece
I saw this movie years ago and instantly fell in love. It's a fantastic story told with heart and plenty of chills... but no gore. THAT'S makes it so much fun. (I've loved horror since I was knee -high, so I can appreciate that. )

One of the best ghost stories ever!
1980's "The Changeling", starring George C. Scott, Melvyn Douglas, and Trish Van Devere, is a thoroughly frightening and suspenseful horror classic with a terrific storyline. Scott, who plays John Russell, a gifted musician, is superb as the grieving father/husband who has just lost his wife and daughter in a freakish car accident. Wanting only to get back on his feet emotionally and return to the music he loves, he moves to Seattle and rents an old mansion from the local Historical Society, with the help of Claire Norman (Trish Van Devere, Scott's wife in real life), who works for the Society. At first, everything runs fairly smoothly-but it isn't long until the spooky stuff starts and the shivers take over your spine... Director Peter Medak did an incredible ... 1980's "The Changeling", starring George C. Scott, Melvyn Douglas, and Trish Van Devere, is a thoroughly frightening and suspenseful horror classic with a terrific storyline. Director Peter Medak did an incredible job of laying out this scary tale, without all the CGI, special effects, and loud-music jump scenes used by so many other (inferior) films of the genre. We are terrified because of what we DON'T see-although there are some very creepy visual scares as well. The film succeeds because we are drawn into the main character's plight to find out why the Presence in the house is so determined to get his attention and help...he must first find out the horrible truth hidden in the mansion's dark history. "The Changeling" compares favorably with other ghost story-type movies such as 1963's "The Haunting" and 1961's "The Innocents", which are both exceptional horror flicks in their own right. A great cast, excellent direction, and a splendid screenplay work to create an intensely dark atmosphere of mystery and horror. 5 stars!!

"The Changeling" DVD
In college, the vintage movie house in my town played classic movies throughout the year. In October of every year, they would always run older scary movies, which were a big hit among college students. This movie first won my heart during such a time - The film is older and lacks the 'state of the art' effects. However, to me, that's what makes this film so good. The story is about a widower, trying to escape the pain of losing his family, moves into an old, historic house in the country. The house takes on a life of its own and the widower attempts to solve the mystery of who is haunting the house. What he learns exposes an unsolved crime and brings peace to the house.
