***MINIMAL SPOILERS*** Sylvester Stallone, struggling Actor on his mid-20's, happened to watch a somewhat non-descript boxing match between the Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali, and a Juorney-man "retread" no-name, no-chance in hades freezing over Chuck Wepner. The TV commentators were "jesting" about had betting being legal, how many seconds would Wepner last in the first round against the formidable favorite, Ali. Turns out that Wepner "went-the-distance", lasting an impressive 15 rounds, a feat that up to that time, only TWO other opponents in Ali's career had ever dared to do( Ken Norton and Joe Frazier). One of the first stops was the Chartoff-Winkler( Irwin Winkler) Production Company, and they were interested. Lo and behold, some circles wanted Robert Blake to play Rocky Balboa, but Stallone held fast, and reportedly took a drastic pay cut to play te lead. But Stallone was smart enough to get a piece of the gate, which was astronomical, given that this movie was only granted a One Million, one hundred thousand Dollar budget. Getting the Composer John Conti was another stroke of genius, and the supporting cast of Burgess Meredith, Burt Young was more genius. Talia Shire, real life younger sister of Francis Ford Capolla, of the Godfather fame, proved that nepotism had no bearing on her acting abilities, as she nailed this character of Adrian down to a tee. Carl Weathers as Apollo Creed, the symbol for Ali, should have won an Academy Award. Matter of fact, this underdog of a movie walked away with THREE Oscars: Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Picture in 1977. The Other two categories for a rare completion of the "Grand Slam of the Oscars" was within reach here: The other two categories that got nominations but lost were: Best Screenplay and Best Actress. Only THREE movies of all-time have accomplished the Grand Slam of the Oscars, and this one was oh so close! Sylvester Stallone became the THIRD person of all-time to be nominated for both Acting and Writing the same year, following Charlie Chaplin and Orson Welles. All in all, this great movie did win 17 awards. Rocky sequels ll, lll, lV, and V are excellent.

The first film in the series took home three Academy Awards in 1977, and Stallone himself was nominated for the Best Actor and Best Screenplay awards. What started out as a fairly low budget story about the little boxer who could turned into a pop culture icon, and Stallone is the man who deserves most of the credit for that. Rocky is his character, he's played the man in all five films to date, he wrote all five of the films, and he is associated with the character even more often than he is with John ... All five films are given new, high definition anamorphic widescreen transfers in their original aspect ratios of 1.85.1. Rocky III, Rocky IV and Rocky V also have alternate fullframe versions available on their respective discs as well. The colors look very nice, there's not much in the way of print damage to complain about on any of the films and aside from a very natural looking coat of grain present on the five films, the image on each disc is quite clean looking with a nice, high level of detail present from start to finish. Seeing as the previous edition of the first film was rather gritty looking, there is a noticeable improvement here for that film in particular, at least in regards to the overall quality of the image. This doesn't come without a price though, as for some reason there is some slight picture information missing on the top and bottom of the screen. While this only occurs in the first movie as far as I could tell, the fact that it happens at all is rather unusual. It's minor cropping, but it is there. That issue aside, the first film looks a lot better here than it has on previous editions and the sequels look pretty solid as well. There is some mild edge enhancement (most noticeable on the fourth film for some odd reason), but there aren't any problems with compression artifacts at all on any of the movies. Skin tones look dead on, and the colors are nicely defined, never bleeding into each other and always looking very distinct. Why fullframe versions are included for the later three films and not for the first two is a good question, but I wouldn't bother watching these widescreen films in fullframe versions anyway so I could quite honestly care less about that – though I know there are people who do still prefer fullframe. For those people, the three discs that do provide fullframe options do so on the other side of the DVD, and image quality on those versions is just as good as it is on the widescreen versions. Each film comes with its respective theatrical trailer. None of the other supplements from previous releases have been carried over from previous releases (though to the best of my knowledge, the sequels have never been released with anything on the discs as far as supplements go except for trailers anyway). "The Rocky Anthology" DVD
This boxed DVD set of five movies from "Rocky" through "Rocky V" is an awesome set to have! I love "Rocky" movies and wanted to have all of them to watch at my leisure at home. I found the set at a great price on my E-bay and purchased them several months ago. These movies are great for family and friends to have a "Rocky" fest anytime you want. I like the theme of all the movies highlighting the American spirit of never giving up when things go against you in life. The packaging of the set is nice with a picture of "Rocky" himself on the front draped in an American flag. The five individual DVD movies are also in cases inside the outer box. Can anyone top the feeling you get when you ever hear " It's the eye of the Tiger and the thrill of the fight" on the radio as "Rocky" always comes to ... This boxed DVD set of five movies from "Rocky" through "Rocky V" is an awesome set to have! I love "Rocky" movies and wanted to have all of them to watch at my leisure at home. Yo, Adrian!!!
I first found this collection a few months back when my roommate got it for his birthday. With watching I-V and with VI coming out at Christmas, i knew i wanted a set for myself. If you're looking for just the movies, then this is something to go with. All movies are widescreen and are nicely restored. If you like all the hype, stories, and drama of the Rocky movies then this set is for you. A couple of reasons i only give it a 'good' is for the other stuff. First off, there are no special features other than the trailer for the movies and a trailer for the video game "Rocky Legends". If you love special features, then go out and buy the special edition of Rocky and wait until Rocky VI comes out on DVD .
