With THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, director Roland Emmerich (INDEPENDENCE DAY, GODZILLA) trades evil aliens and radioactive lizards in for some seriously bad weather. When a radical change in the temperature of the world's oceans causes deadly storms and sets a new Ice Age in motion, climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) must race from Washington D.C. to save his son, Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal), in the subzero climes of New York City. Elsewhere, tornadoes and hail menace the globe, leading to international disasters on an extraordinary level.Emmerich, who has proven to be a master of big-budget cinematic destruction on numerous occasions, aims to outdo himself with THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. Here entire cities are ripped apart, flooded, and/or frozen, adding up to one of the biggest disaster movies ever filmed. Although astonishingly rendered special effects rule the movie, adept actors such as Quaid and Gyllenhaal (along with Sela Ward, Ian Holm, Emmy Rossum, and others) turn in solid performances that help to balance out the meteorological mayhem. Surprisingly, Emmerich also uses the film as a vehicle for clever moments of social and political commentary, making THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW admirably smarter and considerably more entertaining than typical Hollywood blockbusters.

    Great ending the astronauts look down at the Earth after all the disaster and say wow I've never seen it so Clear!

    What's wrong with America's that we have too many people in politics too many people in the military that think they know it all and then just too many people...ops That's so true. The true cause of global warming is all people's opinions on everything. The do-nothing world. Please Democrats do something this time the president's right about you guys doing nothing. The New York Times should have a section every Tuesday to go along with the section on global hell! Ergo global warming is just too thought process where you say this could be happening, Where Global hell would say what's your evidence Australia burning fog on the coast where cars are having accidents and people getting killed Etc

    What would you do if???

    This movie makes you stop and think. What would you do if a major (of epic proportions) snowstorm and bitter cold hit where you live? This movie engages several characters who do a great job of making you feel as if you are right there with them....from the dad who walks to New York to save his son, to the son who listens to his dad and saves his friends, to the mom who is a doctor who is stuck all alone in an empty hospital with a patient, to the friends who risk their lives, to the ship that floats down main street New York, to the hungry wolves...this movie has little bit of everything, action, adventure, comedy (I love the homeless guy and his dog), romance, drama, sadness, etc. It's a heck of a movie and one to keep!

    A good effort but a bit too emotional for my taste, still worth the time.

    The special effects were convincing however the script seemed a little busy with too many things going on like the hero's wife interacting with the cancer patient who had no relevance to the plot save to demonstrate said wife's duty and empathy to the patient. The idea of deep sea currents slowing and stopping global heat to the northern latitudes is valid and completely credible but in reality it will take decades and centuries.

    Not stunning, but still very good.

    I like this movie a lot. It is watchable more than once. It lacks the gripping storytelling which can really keep us from going to get a sandwich. Still, it is presented with a realism which leaves one looking out to the sky for signs of erratic weather. (Unfortunately, sometimes we are finding some.) People who want fast paced car chases, drug stupors, and strippers are likely to find this story boring. I find it hard these days to locate a good movie which is slower paced so I can savor it as it unfolds. I can't describe a really good special moment or scene, but I still really like the movie. I guess because I can enjoy it while I relax.
