On October 3, 1993, Army Rangers and members of the elite Delta Force participated in a covert operation in Mogadishu, Somalia that went horribly wrong. Sent to abduct two lieutenants of a vicious Somali warlord, the soldiers found themselves surrounded by hostile militia. Two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down and many men lost their lives. Mark Bowden of the Philadelphia Inquirer told the story of the battle in his exhaustively researched, critically acclaimed book, BLACK HAWK DOWN, and filmmaker Ridley Scott (GLADIATOR) and screenwriter Ken Nolan have done an amazing job of bringing the dramatic story to the screen. Like Bowden's book, the film does not thoroughly examine the context of the conflict, but gives a detailed and intense blow-by-blow account of the fighting. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Josh Hartnett as a competent but nervous Ranger sergeant leading his first mission, Ewan McGregor as a "desk jockey" who excels when sent into combat, Eric Bana (THE INCREDIBLE HULK) as a cocky and enigmatic Delta, and Ron Eldard as a downed Black Hawk pilot. The violence of the film is brutal and nearly constant. Scott unflinchingly captures the chaos and mayhem of battle with tremendous visual finesse.

Action-Packed Urban Warfare in Somalia
One of the best war movies at showing the confusion, shock, intensity, and frustration of combat. Powerfully true to life. Surround Sound effects are first rate; you might think you're right there, especially in some of the fire fights when the rockets are whooshing and bullets whizzing by the Rangers. The scenes showing the 2 Delta Force soldiers putting themselves in the midst of overwhelming odds to rescue the crew of one of the downed Blackhawk helicopters seems so true to life to the actual rescue effort for which they were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. The best performance I've seen by Hartnett with "spot on" performances by a very talented cast. Ridley Scott succeeds again. One of the best movies I've ever seen!
I'm not big on spoilers, so I'll be brief about story line(s). This movie is about the incident in Somalia that resulted in a bloody mess. Some may remember the video shown on the NEWS all over the world showing a dead American soldier being dragged through the streets.. this is the event in question. This movie is fairly intense and you will find yourself pulled into the movie quickly. I have always had a deep respect the the men and women that choose to protect our freedom.. this movie is a true to life story that made the respect even deeper. Bottom Line: Not for the young children, but everyone else should find this a truly engaging film well worth the investment of their time and money.I'm not big on spoilers, so I'll be brief about story line(s). realistic for hollywood
according to the commentary by the real soldiers depicted in the movie, it was realistic within limits of dramatic license. it is not a documentary. i fell for the notion that the mission was a failure but upon viewing the movie several times i realized i was wrong. the mission was a success. i do recommend watching this so you can unserstand what happened on 9/11.

Best war film ever!
Realistic account of urban warfare. Puts you right in the middle of the action. Incredible depiction of heroism. Well acted top to bottom. Brilliantly directed by iconic director Ridley Scott.
