David E. Kelley has made a career out of creating quirky characters in shows such as ALLY MCBEAL and BOSTON LEGAL, and this early offering from the TV guru is no exception. Tom Skerrit (BROTHERS & SISTERS) and Kathy Baker (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS) won Emmys for their roles as James and Jill Brock, a couple trying to raise a family in middle America. As sheriff in the small Wisconsin town of Rome, James Brock sees strange things that would shock even big-city cops. The town is a haven for the wacky and weird, and no day is ever boring for its residents. PICKET FENCES also featured the talents of Fyvush Finkel (Kelley's BOSTON PUBLIC), Lauren Holly (DUMB AND DUMBER), and Ray Walston (FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH). This release includes the first season in its entirety, including the show's pilot episode.

There is never a dull moment that occurs between those picket fences!
As I had anticipated, this wonderful television series and award-winning drama brought a big smile to my face as I re-connected with the wonderful actors and most creative "issues" with which they dealt. The setting is in the very small town of Rome, Wisconsin, where you would assume little, if anything of consequence, would happen. BUT, on the contrary, there is never a dull moment. So much seemed to occur within those "picket fences." How wonderful my viewing has been!As I had anticipated, this wonderful television series and award-winning drama brought a big smile to my face as I re-connected with the wonderful actors and most creative "issues" with which they dealt. At the end of the day....
Picket Fences was, I thought, the most inventive, thought provoking, humorous show on television, at the time it premiered. It dealt with issues; large and small, political and personal, sacred and profane, and it forced you to look at your real feelings about all of it, usually while laughing through your tears. I was almost afraid to open the dvd collection, as much as I have been looking forward to seeing it again. I just knew it was going to have lost something with age, that it was not as sharp, not as incisive as it once was. I was wrong. The writing has more than withstood the decade which has passed, and the issues are as poignet as when I first viewed them. Jimmy Brock, the sheriff, is still stong willed, determined and vulnerable. Jill, his wife, life's partner and town doctor, ... Picket Fences was, I thought, the most inventive, thought provoking, humorous show on television, at the time it premiered. Jill, his wife, life's partner and town doctor, is still a screaming feminist, the antithesis of step monster, and as self searching as I first new. The children are bright, imaginative, completely aware they are the center of their parent's universe, inquisitive and articulate. Kimberly Brock, the beautiful Hollie Marie Combs is beautiful, unspoiled and as brilliant as any parent could hope. From Doug Wambaugh, the deputies, the town coroner, the townsfolk, all the way to Judge Bones, I have slipped into a feeling of friendship and family long lost. And at the end of the day, can any of us ask for anything more than the feeling of coming home? All sugary sweetness aside, if David Kelly makes me wait this long for season 2, he will be able to write his next series as an homage to the e-bayer who went postal on his production staff!

Great show. We always loved it. Season 1 easy to find, 2-3-4 harder to find.
We get a chance to love this show again. Yay!! The sad part is, it's quite hard to find the other seasons. Many of the one's I've found, are not for region 1 or are in "German". There are region free DVD players out there for 39.00....and more. Got to be careful not to be cheated.

Picket Fences - Season One (2007, DVD)
14 years ago my daughter and I first watched Picket Fences during it's second season. It very quickly became a favorite for both of us. Once a week we'd sit on the couch together, curl up with an afghan, and watch this wonderful television series together. I've never seen some of the season 1 episodes and am joyfully watching them now. This series is what television at its finest is all about - well written episodes that make you laugh, sometimes make you cry, and most importantly - touch you and make you feel like you are a better person as a result of watching it. You can relate to all of the characters on some level, and as the series progresses you can see the growth of the characters, which is another attribute of a well written television series. I've also purchased season 1 for my daughter as a Christmas present and look forward to watching some episodes together to remind both of us of that special time we shared together in the past. If you've never watched this series, I highly recommend purchasing season 1 and trying it. It is what good television was and should be, and even after 15 years, still is as relevant and touching as it ever was. I am looking forward to the release of the subsequent seasons, of which I will purchase both for me and my daughter.

Funny, Quirky series. I love it!
This is a great series. I have been thinking about it for years and decided to find it on dvd. I am having a problem finding season 3 in region 1 though. Bummer. (To the seller, I am glad you like my town of Placerville)!
