Zoot Suit Riot: Swingin hits o, Cherry Poppin' Daddies
Okay I like this cd. I love big band jazz but I've heard better. This collection of mostly original songs sounds like singer/guitarist/frontman Steve Perry, maybe was a frustrated rock musician who used to play in the high school stage band but couldn't get a break in Pop/Rock. Maybe he was just trying to modernize bigband? The result is a kind of odd collection of songs with gritty, cynical subject matter. Sometimes a song might have elements of rock, big band, honky-tonk, and dixie jazz forced into a sometimes bumpy relationship. The vocals are in tune but don't really sound like the warm tones one usually expects from big band efforts. Most of the songs work, but sometimes the arrangements are not quite smoothly coordinated and sound kind of raw. Maybe that is some of the appeal; an ... Okay I like this cd. You Gotta Love Swing!!!
I have wanted this album for years, but never got around to buying it. With the insurgance of swing dancing and "So You Think You Can Dance" TV show, it reminded me of how much I wanted this. So I got immediately on Ebay and found it, bought it, have been playing it loudly in my car ever since! This music makes you smile and picks you up if you are having a bad day. I LOVE IT!!! It's also not something you hear here in Okeechobee, FL. so, the weird looks that I get when I'm going through town, make me know that it's something special. When a modern day band starts playing music of the yesteryear,there´s always an element that´s missing. That´s why it´s better to bring something of your own to the mix. Cherry poppin´daddies have chosen swing,but although reminicent of the music of the 40´s, they´ve brought the element of rock music in that group playing is not loose,but very tightly played,uptempo and very energetic. Arrangements are cleverly divided,some songs featuring the piano,some songs,horns. This is a good time record, simply oozing with positive feelings. If you´re like me,interested in older jazz/swing,but are wary of venturing in that area,this is your way in. it´s defenitively in that area,but with rock attitude,short,sharp songs. A masterful representation of a bygone era infused with the modern lexicon, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies hit the nail squarely on the head with the album "Zoot Suit Riot..." The sound surpasses other attempts to revive the genre by groups such as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and speaks to the modern listener in crystal clear, big band, swinging fashion. The only regret is that the Cherry Poppin' Daddies haven't made a dozen more albums with the same flavour.
