With DUCK SEASON, writer/director Fernando Eimbcke lovingly brings a touching tale to life. Shot in black-and-white and on a minuscule budget, Eimbcke's film is a slice-of-life comedy that takes place over the course of one day in a Mexico City apartment. Flama (Daniel Miranda) and Moko (Diego Catano) are two bored teenagers who plan a day of unsupervised fun together in Flama's mother's humble abode. Videogames, Coca-Cola, and pizza are high on their list of priorities, but things don't quite go according to plan. First, a slightly older female neighbor, Rita (Danny Perea), arrives to bake a cake in the kitchen. Then the pizza man arrives and the boys challenge him to a soccer videogame as payment for the food. But when the power in the building cuts out mid-game the fun really starts as the foursome argue, clown around, and do anything they can to stave off the boredom that threatens to engulf them. Ostensibly a comedy, Eimbcke's beautifully shot movie also presents some thoughtful musings on teenage life. Flama's parents are going through a painful divorce--a subject he tentatively broaches with the others by showing them a painting of ducks that his mother and father both want to claim as their own. From here the movie takes a pleasant stroll into the adolescent psyches of its four characters, with the group devouring Rita's marijuana-laced cake and wandering into delicious dreamlike states which reveal their naive hopes and dreams. Although stylistically reminiscent of the earliest works by filmmakers such as Jim Jarmusch and Kevin Smith, DUCK SEASON conjures up a world all of its own, and is a welcome introduction to the cinematic mind of Fernando Eimbcke.

I ordered a steelbook blu ray and the case came well packaged and with no scratch or visible dent. The blu ray disc is in excellent condition. The only con has to do with the bonus dvd disc which seems to be rotted, but I think that's a problem with every Universal and Warner Brothers dvd's.

    Good Comedy

    In the movie Duck Season, a couple of young friends get together to play games on their XBOX and order a pizza. When all of a sudden the neighbor who is a cute young girls stops over to use their oven. Their pizza finally arrives and in refusing to pay the delivery guy, they work it out over one of the video games. of course, the power goes out so they take the time to learn about each other and their families and how they are going through divorce. A very interesting movie - however rated R so it is not for the entire family.

    Duck Season

    I read several rave reviews about this film, but it got very short play in theaters (if any at all) because (one) it's in Spanish, (two) it's in black and white, (three) nobody gets murdered and there aren't any CGI effects, and (four)it has a gay subtext. As it turns out, the color scheme of the movie matches the dull, day-to-day existence of its middle class teenage characters while the slow pace (and lack of dragons and drug lords) allows us to come to know everyone in the film as a real person, almost in real time. Nobody, it turns out, is really happy, and everbody has secrets. In one wonderful day together, however, everyone gets to face his own personal dragons head on and (maybe) make a bit of progress in getting on with the rest of his life.

    A gem for patient viewers

    This is a dramatic comedy about unpredictable adolescent characters spending a Sunday alone in a middle-class apartment in Mexico City apartment, but it is by no means a "teen-comedy" along the lines of "Amercian Pie". Filmed in five weeks for less than a million dollars, "Temporada" won 11 Ariel awards, the Mexican equivalent of the Oscar, as many as the much more commercially succesful and Tarantino-esque "Amores perros", and it was by far the best-reviewed Mexican film of 2004. It made less than $150,000 in it's short U.S. theatrical run, probably because of it's austere black-and-white photography and slow pacing (it covers nine hours of Sunday loafing in about an hour and a half). The style is indebted to early Jim Jarmusch and Yasujiro Ozu, and if you have the patience to endure the ...

    This movie makes me happy.

    I wasn't expecting it to be completely in black and white. It reminds me of I love lucy when they claim she has red hair but I can't really tell. One of the characters claims he had redish hair but I couldn't see it. It upset me only a fragment. The movie had some slow parts but most indie films do. If you are in love with indie movies you'll probably pee your pants for this one.

    Is a great movie telling the story of the teenager years of 3 average mexican kids on a Sunday, I bought it cause it had great reviews at the film festival it was introduced!!!
