Way too much graphic violence for mainstream film.
Although the film may be heralded by many Wes Craven fans as a wonderful remake of an old film, I must agree with many who saw this film in it's unrated form, that it may just have stepped over the edge of decency. There are many that just can not stomach the rape scene and the cruelty. All films try and tell a story about tragedy of evil versus good and the innocence taken away from others, but I think the killing and raping scene within this film puts it way under my line of human decency. Many scenes of this film where quite enough on their own, but showing cold blooded stabbing and rape of young innocence girls, goes way too far. The tenseness of the film was enough already, but why do we actually have to be shown this type of horror. The desensitizing of our minds ... I'm going to outline the differences in the versions so that you can make you own choices. VERSION COMPARISON: Theatrical Version -vs- Unrated Comparison between Theatrical & Unrated versions (both presented by the US-DVD from Universal) - Theatrical version: 103:33 min without closing titles (109:46 min with closing titles) in NTSC - Unrated: 107:26 min without closing titles (113:36 min with closing titles) in NTSC 45 changed parts, including * 11x alternative footage * 3 recuts * 25 censorship cuts * 20 story cuts Difference: 232.7 sec (= 3:53 min) HISTORY: In 1960 Ingmar Bergman directed the depressing drama Jungfrukällan (The Virgin Spring) which was based on a Swedish legend from the 14th century. It was about a landholder's innocent daughter Karin who was attacked, raped and murdered by three shepherd-brothers. After that, the murderers find shelter by nobody else than Karin's parents so it does not last long until the parents find out about the crime and the father commits vigilante justice. The tale of moral and violence was shocking, especially because of the rape-scene which was unusually explicit for the time, and received the Oscar for the best foreign film in the following year. 12 years later Wes Craven who was unknown at the time adapted the material and made his own variation of the story which was noticeably more lowbrow and sleazy, an exploitation film as it was popular in the seventies. Here, the girl is called Mari, her friend has to suffer, too, and they cross paths with the gang because they want to get some marijuana for the night. Among the violators is a woman, too, and the youngest of the bunch is the son of her lover and gang-leader Krug. Last House On The Left surely is one of the most popular Rape and Revenge films and with David Hess in the role of main villain Krug it offers one of the meanest horror-film-bad-guys ever. If you happen to spend time seeing this film, I would hope that you watch this with the intent of keeping an open mind and remember this is pure fiction, however, it may not be that shocking to you as it was for me. I'm going to give this film an average rating of 4/5 because of the content, yet the tenseness and scariness will probably keep you afraid of strangers from here on out. Higher budget for remake improves technical aspect only
Any review of this remake by the film's original director is likely to include comparisons to the original. Considering the original budget, that was a better movie, especially for its time. The remake changes a few plot aspects and creates a tighter script. The acting is more professional and the video quality is superb in comparison to the first movie. Inexplicably the audio seems actually worse in the new version. Some key lines are swallowed. Despite slightly more modern acting techniques and better overall sets, props, special effects, and cameras, this remake is a poor cousin to the original shocker. Gone are the effects of horror experienced by the girls as well as their marred innocence. Any attempt to explain or justify the actions of the killers should be lost on an audience. The ... The implausible story seemed almost an aside to the horror and action in the original. In the remake, even the unrated one, it appears the director was attempting to pacify the ratings committee to create a wider appeal for the movie. Unfortunately I am sure that did not happen. I am guessing more people still watch the original than the remake and I would guess most prefer the original to its slicker more modern version. I would regret not seeing the original. I could have survived quite well with no remake or at least this particular remake.

Intense and shocking!
This movie really surprised me for a remake! I had very low expectations because I didn't think it would be any good. It was definitely one of those films that keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time! However, one part is very disturbing and not easy to watch (or I would given this 5 stars), but I liked how realistic the events were & there's never a dull moment. It really makes you feel for the characters until you realize it's just a movie! Good acting and worth buying for intense thriller fans!!!This movie really surprised me for a remake! I had very low expectations because I didn't think it would be any good. It was definitely one of those films that keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time! However, one part is very disturbing and not easy to watch (or I would given this 5 stars), but I liked how realistic the events were & there's never a dull moment. The Last House on the Left: should be Dead Zone.
A Doctor takes his wife and 17 year old daughter on a vacation. Everything is going fine, until the daughter meets up with an old friend who works in a convenient store and in comes a guy that they don't know, but walk with him to his hotel room and smokes weed with him. This was Page's idea to do this, because the other little girl is a swim champion. The parts of the movie I would like to get past went slow: the boys dad and girlfriend and uncle came home. The need a car and too the girls car..the girl gives wrong directions, causes the car to hit a tree and she gets beaten and raped, that rape part is too long to watch and all too real. Page tries to run away: they catch her, bring her back, sticks a knife int her kidneys from the front and back and the girl watches her die. The ... The girl gets up slowly, now get this, moves like a snail, then has rock hidden in her hand, hits the boys dad and runs away. She jumps into the water and the dad is shooting at her and hits her. The assume that she is dead and walk off. Then the mean people gets to a house and yes its the girls house. The good Dr. fixes them up from the wreck, they let them sleep in the guest house. The boy picked up the necklace when the day tossed it on the ground, it was a gift to the girl from her dead big brother. The boy puts it beside the cup he was drinking from: The girls mom and dad hear a banging on the porch, they find there daughter laying there half dead: they take her into the house when the mom goes to get stuff to fix up the daughter with, she see's the necklace. She shows the husband, husband said daughter was raped and then all heck brakes loose. They go after the bad guys. The son is a good guy and gives the Dr. his dad's gun. All the bad people are killed one by one and the family with there daughter and the son of the bad guy rides away in the boat end of story. Like your Mom said, beware of strangers. I really injoyed the fact that the victims won the battle in this movie. I would watch it again. Except for the mean parts.

The no-remake purists will be screaming, but the fact is that the 1972 Wes Craven film was just a remake of a film that 99% of the purists have probably never seen. This film beats the 1972 film by a mile. First, there is the rape scene that one newspaper reviewer called "...one of the most graphically brutal and terrifying rapes ever put on screen." Obviously, he never saw I Spit on Your Grave. That was brutal! What I am most reminded of in watching this film is Wes Craven's Red Eye. The tension and surprises were continual once that family (Tony Goldwyn & Monica Potter) realizes who is responsible for what happened to their daughter (Sara Paxton). You will also note the torture porn elements as the father selects from a shelf full of implements to use in seeking revenge. The use of ... I was gratified that the final fight sequence was realistic in the sense that, despite the adrenaline rushing through the father, he was still getting his ass whipped until the son appeared. It took a tag team approach to bring that sucker down and prepare him for his just rewards.
