3040, still a good camera to have, even today
This is a review that considers how the Olympus 3040 is compared to modern cameras, in January 2011. First let me say I have owned more than one since they first came out and they were at the top in performance, durability and features at that time for a digital camera that was that small and not a SLR. Today they would still be considered a great camera when it comes to some of it's strong points, like it's outstanding low light capabilities, relatively small size, and durability. However the market has changed and they are now quite outdated compared to most of the market. Lets start with the memory, they use Smart Media cards which max out at 128mb, and their is no way to extend that capacity or in any convenient way use any other type of memory. Those cards still can be bought for ... This is a review that considers how the Olympus 3040 is compared to modern cameras, in January 2011. First let me say I have owned more than one since they first came out and they were at the top in performance, durability and features at that time for a digital camera that was that small and not a SLR. Today they would still be considered a great camera when it comes to some of it's strong points, like it's outstanding low light capabilities, relatively small size, and durability. However the market has changed and they are now quite outdated compared to most of the market. Lets start with the memory, they use Smart Media cards which max out at 128mb, and their is no way to extend that capacity or in any convenient way use any other type of memory. Those cards still can be bought for about $32 but lets face it, you'd need to have over 15 at $32 each, hold what any modern 2gb costing about $5 will hold. Smart Media is also easy to corrupt if you accidentally do the wrong thing to it. They are also years behind on picture size, with a max picture size of 3.2mb, compared to practically any other small instant camera which would be hard to find with less than a 6mb image. Well what does that mean? If you plan to blow up parts of the pictures, you loose the details real quickly. Add to that they only have a 3x zoom, which is very limiting compared to most modern cameras, and that along with the small image size, limits you ability to capture details necessary for you to do things like blow up one person's face in a picture for a full page potrate. However don't be fooled, if all you're doing is sharing pictures over the internet and don't really need a big zoom or want to blow up parts of pictures, this camera will give you splendid picture quality up to full page prints, just about as well as any other newer camera. The battery life in these cameras is also quite limited, compared to most modern cameras. I only use rechargeable, and you can pretty much always shoot a hundred or so shots without a flash on a charge, but many modern ones shoot 500 or more on a charge. If you like to shoot hundreds or thousands at a time that might piss you off, but it never limited me. Well what about it's good points? Well the 3040 and the 4040 both have about the fastest lenses EVER put in any small consumer camera, and that means right up to today. Technically the lens is an F1.8 lens, but what does that mean. These cameras will take better pictures without a flash in low light than ANY other modern camera. Simply put, they don't need as much time to gather the light they need, so exposure times are faster, and you get less blur. Oh yes many modern cameras use fancy programs to enhance their pictures, but the quality suffers more than it does with these cameras. In addition the fast lense makes it possible for the camera's small internal flash to cover a much longer range than most modern cameras internal flash can cover. You can usually get a good indoor flash picture accross a medium size empty room, without any other flash equipment, and that's something most other cameras can't do at all. The usually have a tough time with anything over 10 feet away and that is very limiting. These cameras are also very durable, and mine have absorbed more bumps and bruises than you might imagine, and kept on running. My kids now use them and although I am sure their not indestructable, they do keep running.

Incredible value at used price with a light hog of a f 1.8 lense.
This was my first digital camera and I still have it and use it to this day. It's only 3.3 megapixels, but does a great job on pictures up to 8x10 and that's as big as I ever need. 3x5 and 4x6 are great. They are no better on a 12 MP camera. The real gem in this camera is the f1.8 lens. It makes picture taking in low light situations amazing. A professional camera would have a 1.4 or even a 1.2 lens, but for this price range and f1.8 is amazing. With these selling for less than $50 used, they are a steal. Just incredible value IMHO. I just bought its brother, the Olympus 4040 for $40. For a few more dollars you can get the Olympus 5050. I really don't think there is much if any difference among these cameras with respect to mega pixels. My 3040 takes great pictures, what more do I ... It's not too big, but you'll not carry it in your pocket as you can with the FX8 or 9.

Twenty years old and still works perfectly!
I enjoy using older digital cameras and I was glad to find a complete Olympus C-3040 set-up at a very attractive price. It's not a 45Mpeg modern camera, but in good light it takes fine pictures despite being 20 years old. I think it's fun to use these older cameras and see what they can do.

A Great Deal on a 3.3 mp Camera
Out Standing Digital Camera. Just needed something other then my 12.5 Mp Camera to take a few pic of auction items and to replace my other Olympus 3.0 Mp Camera. I like it being black and the size. It give the look of a well put together camera. It doesn't have all the features as my old Olypus D-550 zoom. But it does have a few that the D-550 doesn't. Over all I paid No more than $16.00 so am very happy with it. If you can get one make sure it comes with a memory card as they don't make them any more. Really good camera, very useful, lots of memory
This has proven to much more useful than I first expected. A macro mode makes this a good camaera to show small devices, which I often have to record. battery life must be pretty good as I am stillusing the batteries supplied and have taken 100+ photographs. The supplied memory card reader allows me to use the spare SD memory units as removable memory on my computer. All in all, I am very happy with the purchase.This has proven to much more useful than I first expected.
