Easy to Recover Data By Swapping Drive Electronics
I bought this used hard drive so I could swap the drive electronics onto a dead drive of the same model, to recover 500 GB of backups. The symptom was that when powered up, the dead drive was completely unresponsive: it didn't spin up, click, or make any noise at all. My motherboard, power supply, and hard drives had died in a mysterious power calamity. Commercial data recovery services charge hundreds or thousands of dollars to do this, so do-it-yourself can be a cost-effective way to go. I was happy that swapping the electronics was so easy. The Maxtor drive electronics may be fragile with respect to power surges (a Western Digital drive survived the same calamity) but swapping requiring just a standard Torx wrench. There were no ribbon cables to deal with, as the board connects to ... I bought this used hard drive so I could swap the drive electronics onto a dead drive of the same model, to recover 500 GB of backups. I was also happy that my drive mechanism spun up and I was able to access my data with the new drive electronics; otherwise, I would have paid too much to buy a used and obsolete hard drive. In the past I have successfully swapped electronics on drives of my own with the same model but slightly different board numbers. Sellers generally don't want you to test compatibility with their wares; therefore, I was happy to find an exact match (Model, TLA and Code) for my drive. In the end, I was pleased to recover my data at a low cost, and would go this route again to recover my data. Because the first replacement device that I purchased was defective, I recommend that think carefully about dealing with sellers who refuse to take returns. I ended up with two good drive mechanisms but only one working board, so if you can find just the drive electronics it might be better. I didn't do this because I could only find an exact match by buying a complete drive.

Cheap but cheap
Do not depend on this drive. Reliability seems horrible. These are Maxtor drives, not Seagate, and are only listed as Seagate because they bought Maxtor. 2/3rds of mine die in only a few months. Luckily, I'm using them in a raid array and can buy them cheap enough to replace them as they fail and not lose my data. If it weren't for the fact that it's a raid array, I would have ditched them all already. My only advice if you want to use these drives for anything is to do backups often.Do not depend on this drive. Reliability seems horrible. Great work hourse, last a long time
I use several of these drive and they have lasted a long time several of the have 15,000 + hours of use over 10 years on them without failing. Drive makes some noise compared to a new drive but otherwise is a very good unit. Perfect for Legacy systems.
