À propos de ce produit

Product Information

A fascinating exploration of the science of the impossible from death rays and force fields to invisibility cloaks revealing to what extent such technologies might be achievable decades or millennia into the future. One hundred years ago, scientists would have said that lasers, televisions, and the atomic bomb were beyond the realm of physical possibility. In Physics of the Impossible , the renowned physicist Michio Kaku explores to what extent the technologies and devices of science fiction that are deemed equally impossible today might well become commonplace in the future. From teleportation to telekinesis, Kaku uses the world of science fiction to explore the fundamentals and the limits of the laws of physics as we know them today. He ranks the impossible technologies by categories Class I, II, and III, depending on when they might be achieved, within the next century, millennia, or perhaps never. In a compelling and thought-provoking narrative, he explains: . How the science of optics and electromagnetism may one day enable us to bend light around an object, like a stream flowing around a boulder, making the object invisible to observers downstream . How ramjet rockets, laser sails, antimatter engines, and nanorockets may one day take us to the nearby stars . How telepathy and psychokinesis, once considered pseudoscience, may one day be possible using advances in MRI, computers, superconductivity, and nanotechnology . Why a time machine is apparently consistent with the known laws of quantum physics, although it would take an unbelievably advanced civilization to actually build one Kaku uses his discussion of each technology as a jumping-off point to explain the science behind it. An extraordinary scientific adventure, Physics of the Impossible takes readers on an unforgettable, mesmerizing journey into the world of science that both enlightens and entertains. "

It is here that the book's strength lies: the impossible is a gateway for discussing what we still do not understand, those gray areas that are surely the most fascinating part of physics.....there is a surprising amount of heavyweight, cutting-edge science woven into the fabric of this book. • Nice!

Back in 1995, I had a sandwich in Pittsburgh. That doesn't sound too exciting, but I've been thinking about that sandwich for a dozen years and just got around to recreating it. But first, let's talk about Pennsylvania beer. Namely Yuengling, the oldest brewery in America. It was recently introduced to the Memphis market through Budweiser (thanks to Bill H. for the info!). It's having some difficulty gaining new fans in the region because many think that it's Chinese, but local residents of Pennsylvanian heritage (or Steelers fans) have been known to rent vans, drive up to the Quaker State, and drive back with dozens of cases of this brew. It's not the best beer in the world, but for the price it's amazing. At the store I grabbed a sixer of the Black & Tan, traditionally a layered ...

  • Understanding the Impossible

After enjoying Dr Kaku's take on things on the Science Channel, I decided to check out his approach to science in print. He is every bit as interesting as his screen presence indicates. Using references from science fiction and everyday experience, he explores such things as faster-than-light travel, time travel, black holes, and other seemingly impossible aspects of Physics. (Is it possible to go faster than the speed of light? No, but...) His writing style is chatty, and he very much agrees with Einstein that "Science should be explained in terms that even a child can understand." That doesn't mean he talks down to his readers. He is concise in his approach and makes this a very readable book. At times, he reminds me of the late, great Issac Asimov and, more recently, Dr Brian ...

  • Physics of the Impossible

Dr. Kaku has a tremendous talent for reducing complex scientific theories to easily understood concepts, allowing the layperson to visualize the described phenomena. This book, along with "Parallel Universes" are must-reads for anyone with an interest in physics, without having a scientific background. Highly recommended, for ages 15 to 85!

  • Must Read !

I was a little unsure about this book at first glance, but I went out on a limb and purchased it. It is one of the most interesting books i've read. I would highly recommend anyone who is even remotely interested in any of the topics to pick it up ASAP. You wont regret it.

  • Best book ever.

This is officially my number 1 favorite book. Michio Kaku is a bit cocky but that's ok. I don't blame him. I always said to myself there is NOTHING thats impossible if we can operate on the sub-atomic level. I was right all along, he just put it in detail.
