In the aftermath of a job gone awry, an American hitman retreats to the Italian countryside, where he befriends a local priest and strikes up an unexpected romance while awaiting the details of his next assignment. Jack (George Clooney) is lucky to be alive after his Swedish assignment went sour, and he knows that it's only a matter of time before his luck runs out. The American (DVD, 2010)
An American hit man has an unexpected ending to a relationship when two hired guns look him up and he is forced to kill them. Unfortunately, he also had to kill the woman that was there with him too. He escapes to Italy to lay low until his next assignment. He has no idea how his cover was blown or by whom. While in Italy he befriends a priest and meets a beautiful prostitute and falls in love with her. He gets his next assignment and starts to prepare a weapon for what was supposed to be an assassination. Another attempt ha been made on him. Nobody knew where he was, how could they have found him again? The only solution is the people that he works for, and he realizes that he must be the target. Deciding to quit he rigs the weapon to explode, and asks his girlfriend to leave with him, ... It was predictable, and the only saving grace was the absolutely beautiful Italian girl Violante Placido.

Not what I was exspecting but still a very good movie.
It was good, but not the action packed film the previews suggested that it was going to be. But I'd say it was a much more accurate portray of a spy than you get from most films. This one of an aging operator that has been targeted by some people he pissed off earlier in his career while dealing with his own emotional problems and trying to find love and happiness while also trying to stay alive with a few nice twists of paranoia. I liked this film a lot more after the second time I saw it, than I did after the first time. My only real complaint is the ending which while I'm sure that this was the unanswered effect that the film maker was going for. I would have liked to have had a definitive ending to it one way or another. So I'm only going to give this film 3 stars ... not your typical Clooney movie
Set in far south Italy, the scenery is beautiful and a part of the Italian countryside that is not usually featured in American films. The characters are not really well developed, and the movie is pretty dark. But, it is interesting in its own right as the protagonist is trying to resolve his place in the world

A good movie that may take more than one viewing to appreciate.
The American is an acquired taste, thats for sure. Its a different movie than most action spy films that are going 100% of the time at 100 miles per hour. The American brings this over done genre back down to a human root. That having the knowledge and skills of a killer don't make you a badass, they make you unable to sleep, or to enjoy the things you want to. You are confined to living a trail of lies that accomplish a small mission that seems meaningless and disgusting. Every noice, every rustle could be the sound of youre death. Its not a perfect movie, and at times you'll want more details. But its not about the plot, its about the character jack, Clooney is haunting in a deep and subtle way. 4/5 GoodThe American is an acquired taste, thats for sure. The foreigners were better than the American
An aging Clooney not so great but still a decent film. Saying it was entertaining is a question. More so yes if you like the nudity.
