Product Information

Most of us know what it feels like to fall under the spell of food--when one slice of pizza turns into half a pie, or a handful of chips leads to an empty bag. But it's harder to understand why we can't seem to stop eating--even when we know better. When we want so badly to say "no," why do we continue to reach for food? Dr. David Kessler, the dynamic former FDA commissioner who reinvented the food label and tackled the tobacco industry, now reveals how the food industry has hijacked the brains of millions of Americans. The result? America's number-one public health issue. Dr. Kessler cracks the code of overeating by explaining how our bodies and minds are changed when we consume foods that contain sugar, fat, and salt. Food manufacturers create products by manipulating these ingredients to stimulate our appetites, setting in motion a cycle of desire and consumption that ends with a nation of overeaters. The End of Overeating explains for the first time why it is exceptionally difficult to resist certain foods and why it's so easy to overindulge. Dr. Kessler met with top scientists, physicians, and food industry insiders. The End of Overeating uncovers the shocking facts about how we lost control over our eating habits--and how we can get it back. Dr. Kessler presents groundbreaking research, along with what is sure to be a controversial view inside the industry that continues to feed a nation of overeaters--from popular brand manufacturers to advertisers, chain restaurants, and fast food franchises. For the millions of people struggling with weight as well as for those of us who simply don't understand why we can't seem to stop eating our favorite foods, Dr. Kessler's cutting-edge investigation offers new insights and helpful tools to help us find a solution. There has never been a more thorough, compelling, or in-depth analysis of why we eat the way we do.

  • Interesting

This was a helpful tool for me to kick start my new way of life as far as food is concerned. It helps you to look at food from a scientific and commercial aspect. It teaches the reader a bit about the food industry, particularly popular restaurant chains. When you learn of the methods used to sell their product to consumers it will make you angry, which will help change your view of their unhealthy products. I found the book to be more scientific than mental. Kessler presents many good reasons to avoid the highly processed foods that so many of us eat. My only complaint is that the book repeats itself alot. In certain parts I started to feel like I was reading the same thing over and over but phrased slightly different. I would recommend the book to anyone looking for some motivation to ...

  • No More Guilt! It's NOT your FAULT! **BEST SELLER!**

This book actually explains what causes Americans to over eat! It's a chemical reaction that occurs in our brain. Many(if not all) commercial food vendors and restaruarants add ingredients to the food you eat that causes a chemical reaction in your brain that drives you to seek out Like-Type foods-thus overeating. Do not eat fast food or feed it to your children. It will shock you to find out what the companies do that risk American's health--all to make a Buck! It is NOT a diet book. It provides strategies that will help you control the overeating. It is written very well and easy to follow! I recommend this book highly for EVERYONE!

  • The End of Overeating

David Kessler, a former Surgeon General, explores the obvious concept that when we are presented with delicious food, we eat too much of it and then gain weight. This is not a startling revelation, but Kessler uses unnecessarily fancy vocabulary to express what could be said simply and plainly. Example: "The reinforcing properties of hyperpalatable foods are primarily in their capacity to stimulate the taste apparatus." And: "When we don't eat, we receive physiological cues that elicit a craving for food." The result: 304 pages (including 55 pages of footnotes) that give readers a firm grasp of eveybody already knows. Save your time and money for a book that can actually teach you something.

  • Finally I understand

I am not quite finished this book yet. To me it is not the type of book you just read through and then put away. I has taken me some time to think about what I have read and then read some more. AND IT IS ALL SCARY!!! Now I know why I have such a hard time being rational about my eating; why I can't stop eating certain foods; why I feel like I am in a vicious cycle! If you have foods you can't say "no" to, read this book. It's great! Even if I can't stop my eating (which I think I will be able to accomplish within the next six months or so), I have learned that it's not about willpower and not a character flaw, so I feel better about myself.

  • Title is very intriguing and is not misleading either

The book is very interesting and makes you think about everything that you eat and why more than half of Americans are obese. The fast food industry has made Americans believe that what we eat is great but it's loaded with unhealthy products and that's makes us fat and prone to all types of horrible health issues. It's the ugly truth but it's a good read.
