With Lincoln's hard-fought reelection victory in hand, Ulysses S. Grant, commander of the Union forces, allowed Sherman to lead the largest and riskiest operation of the war. In rich detail, Trudeau explains why General Sherman's name is still anathema below the Mason-Dixon Line, especially in Georgia, where he is remembered as "the one who marched to the sea with death and devastation in his wake."     a must read for Civil War foamers

    I heard a rebroadcast of the author on C-SPAN and it compelled me to purchase his book. It was so much more than a march to the sea. It ranks up there with the all time greatest military moves of all time. The author provides a day by day account of Sherman's army. He goes as far as daily weather reports and countless soldier diary accounts.
