The best vampire movie ever
Widely and correctly considered the best vampire movie ever, Katherine Bigelow's masterpiece never uses the word "vampire". The first movie to feature her very original movie-making style, this movie's mood and characters grip you from the start. The action starts right away, with a young cowboy picking up (or so he thinks) a young vampire girl. She likes him enough to bite, but not bleed him, so he can join her band of blood-sucking killers. Every actor in this movie is totally convincing and their characters are well fleshed-out, even some with minimal roles. The score in the background keeps you wondering what's going to happen next, and the barroom scene is simply incredible. The extras on this DVD are interesting, mainly serving to explain how the movie got made and the actors ... Hard to Find 1980's Vampire Movie Classic
The DVD of the vampire movie "Near Dark" is excellent. This movie has been hard to find on DVD in the last few years. If you are a fan of vampire movies, this DVD of Near Dark will make you happy.

A different take on the vampire genre
If you were like me just looking into this being Katherine Bigelow's first solo directorial; it's best to watch disc two first to find out the back story on the movie.

“The night is so bright, it’ll blind you”
The film is a true classic, directed by a woman, this motion picture was the FIRST vampire film inspired by the Anne Rice novellas. The pacing of the film is outstanding and if you ever get to see it you will discover so many moments that influenced later films. Great characterization and above par acting make this a worthy addition to anyone’s collection. I rate this film at the level of the vintage 1930s DRACULA for its original take on the vampire lore and the commitment the cast and crew put into making this film. A true labor of love.The film is a true classic, directed by a woman, this motion picture was the FIRST vampire film inspired by the Anne Rice novellas.
