When their mother is hospitalized because of an unspecified illness, two young sisters spend a summer in the Japanese countryside with their father. The children's strange new environment turns out to be a natural wonderland filled with exotic real-life creatures and a trio of furry, woodland sprites who can only be seen by children. The film evokes both the terrors and wonders that children can experience unbeknownst to adults--a feeling the young Miyazaki knew only too well after his mother was hospitalized because of spinal tuberculosis. With homages to ALICE IN WONDERLAND and MARY POPPINS, the second film from Studio Ghibli delighted audiences and put the young animation studio on firm financial footing.

Excellent!
This was my favorite movie growing up. Every week my grandmother and I would walk up the street to the grocery store where they would also rent movies. I rented the movie sooo many times that the owner of the grocery store gave it to me as a gift, but was unfortunately lost in a fire a few years later. I haven't been able to find the VHS version that I love anywhere until now! Disney did a re-create with Dakota Fanning a couple years back but it's nothing like the VHS version. This movie has an excellent plot and is great for younger viewers, but I reccomend it to anybody! Two thumbs waaaay up!This was my favorite movie growing up. Satisfactory
I grew up watching this movie with my family, and hearing the new Disney dub was disappointing so I was ecstatic to find the 20th Century Fox version. The VHS works and I was very satisfied with this purchase

Hayao is a Amazing
Anything Hayao Miyazaki turns to gold. I love Totoro, its my fav film. The vhs works well in my vhs player. Love it.

This is the greatest kids video! You have to get the original VHS version, the updated DVD version is not the same. The dialog has been redubbed. In the newer version some of the dialog has been Americanized and the kids don't have as much personality. My children are teenagers and I made the mistake of selling our at a yardsale. They were so upset that I decided to replace it. I bought the DVD not realizing that it was different.
