Full off features but disappointing in some areas
Wanted a pocket sized alternative to my D5 with all the features. In this function it performs well, RAW and shutter priority were a must for me. It produces well saturated and exposed images. Focussing is spot-on every time. HOWEVER, the images have far too much noise, even at iso 200. This was a surprise and a let down. It manifests itself in the shadows, even in bright situations. Photoshop's 'reduce noise' function can take care of some of it but it is still there. The other disappointment is that the lens ought to be a proper 28mm (without the need for an adapter lens). The ideal backup to a DSLR and a high quality camera to keep in your pocket
I was after a G9 following recommendations from photographer friends and I am not disapointed. The best thing about it is the live view screen which has a turn wheel facility adjusting the exposure to the appropiate level while at the same time displaying the histogram of the exposure. There is a lot to learn in this gem of a camera and you will need to consult the manual to be able to get the best out of it. It has a quality feel and gives the impression that it will survive mishaps. "Built like a tank" is a phrase I have seen applied to the G9 and I would not disagree. But this means it is on the heavy side. It seems to me to be the ideal value for money compromise rather than buying a brand new later model G11 or upward.I was after a G9 following recommendations from photographer friends and I am not disapointed. just a perfect bit of kit...!
A friend of mine had one of these a while back, his one however has stopped working for no reason what so ever this did not deter me for getting one from EBay, they can be a wide price range on here from about 80 odd quid up to 200ish, but its well worth the money. After a few weeks of use/ abuse it’s really holding its own, nice sturdy body and features coming out of its ears, not bad for a camera that is technically old and out of date. If you have a digital SLR and want something a bit more compact with all the same feature this is the camera for you, I have got myself a few extras to go with it, a Fish eye lens and telephoto and it performs wonderfully the RAW settings are amazing and the picture quality is top notch, the one dislike is the flash is useless if you attached an ... G9 Grading up from an a710is (I really wanted to upgrade to a 30D SLR, but common sense prevailed about how much i would carry something like that around) - the g9 is a really good choice and is cheap at the price on ebay now. It is a large compact, but still fits in a small size camera pouch. (you could fit 3 slim ixus' for the size!) absolutely gorgeous screen and i like the menu system - it has a whole host of new things and the scroll wheel is a real boon up from the 710 and makes navigating in shot and whilse viewing your pics much quicker It isn't light, but is lovely sturdy feeling (and a much nicer feel than the g12 my friend has which feels plastic and cheap in comparison. The wealth of features mean that you would do better not to buy it if you want a simple point and shoot for ... The wealth of features mean that you would do better not to buy it if you want a simple point and shoot for holidays - on most pictures now i fiddle with one or another function to get a better picture...some people argue this loses the moment sometimes, but when you know where things are it speeds up your response to getting there and getting a picture away. i still have a long way to go to using it fully, but i do enjoy using it and i think in time it will let me learn more about photography.. my only downside is that in low light it possibly isn't as good as an slr because the sensor isn't as big, but i would only trade up to something like a 5D to be bothered with the extra size anothe rtip -get a couple of spare batteries if going out for the whole day - the screen needs to be bright on sunny days!

Canon Powershot G9 - beautifully made and great to use
I wanted a compact camera with an optical viewfinder as they're easier to use at sea in bright light and almost bought a new Canon A1300 but realised I could get a Canon G9 for only about £30 more. Despite being five years old and therefore lacking some of the latest technology found on recent digital compacts, this is a beautifully made solid camera with a great lens and all the control features of an SLR in a relatively small size. Although the G series has moved on the G9 is apparently considered to be one of the best Canon made. It's a pleasure to use and is almost too good for the purpose I bought it for!
