Product Information

"This is the story of an extraordinary boy with a brilliant mind, a heart of gold, and a tortured soul. It is the story of an illness, a fight to live, and a race against death. I want to share the story, and the pain, the courage, the love, and what I learned in living through it. I want Nick's life to be not only a tender memory for us, but a gift to others. . . . I would like to offer people hope and the realities we lived with. I want to make a difference. My hope is that someone will be able to use what we learned, and save a life with it."--Danielle Steel From the day he was born, Nick Traina was his mother's joy. By nineteen, he was dead. This is Danielle Steel's powerful, personal story of the son she lost and the lessons she learned during his courageous battle against darkness. Sharing tender, painful memories and Nick's remarkable journals, Steel brings us a haunting duet between a singular young man and the mother who loved him--and a harrowing portrait of a masked killer called manic depression, which afflicts between two and three million Americans. At once a loving legacy and an unsparing depiction of a devastating illness, Danielle Steel's tribute to her lost son is a gift of life, hope, healing, and understanding to us all.

  • Sad But True

Yes depression and mental illness can kill! While this book does touch the heart it also picks at a nerve, mine anyway..after about the first 3 chapters of reading about how beautiful, special, large, sweet, adorable, well loved, smart, fussed over, Nicky was I was getting a bit agitated myself..and when I read her description of his being a "Don Juan" by the time he was 2 I couldn't help myself I actually rolled my eyes and groaned...come on I had had enough..I skipped the gushing parts and the parts where she let Nicky run wild without any kind of punishment which took me just past the middle of the book..where I read about his horrid loss of his best friend..I also lost my best friend after she was struck by a car....a part of you dies too when that happens so this part really struck a ...

  • not many Steel fans will want to read this book

NOT your usual Danielle Steel book - the author 'steps outside herself' and allows us to see her real-life as a Mother. I've known a number of guys who came back from Vietnam - and killed themselves once home, while avoiding getting killed "in country": what drives a man who tired so hard (and so successfully) to come back alive decide to 'end it all' once he was safe at home? Stell's book won't answer THAT question - but she deals with the "forbidden" topic of suicide. In my experience, the family of a suicide are bitter and hostile:" How could he do this to us?! The disgrace this brings on us! How weak and cowardly!" they say. Ms. Steel loved "Nicky" in his life - and after his death: she doesn't see him as a "coward" or "weakling" for killing himself - and devotes the proceeds of ...

  • VERY TOUCHING STORY

Reading the book was an eye opener for me that mental illness can affect even the rich and famous and how hard it must be to watch your child endure so much pain. Although I have not had anyone close or related to me this disease, it gave me a better understanding of the sickness that so many have had to live with or without medication and the whole ordeal of diagnosis, treatment and the sleepless nights from worrying. Thank you Danielle for telling Nick's story for all to read!

  • His Bright Light by Danielle Steele

This book was excellent. It's a true story about her son and his life and death. He had bipolar and was manic depressive.. I learned alot from this book and I also respect Danielle Steele as a mother who went through such horrific times with her son and her devotion to making things as best as she could with Nick and his disease. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
