Outstanding (though highly academic)
This book is incredible. Especially when comparing the 2020 pandemic to the 1918 Spanish. The government response in 1918 is actually worse than now, which I found incredible. The disregard for human life, the ignoring of risks to the citizens and soldiers, it's really stunning. The author is great, though gets repetitive frequently. He is able to sprinkle in some great historical facts as he tells the story of The Great Influenza. It's a slog given the overall academic style, but well worth it, and highly recommended.This book is incredible. Especially when comparing the 2020 pandemic to the 1918 Spanish. Fits the contents
The book is very informative and well written, lots of technique data and backgrounds on those involved with the great flu. After you read the book, you realize how the fear mongering, and extreme sensationalism that the governments are imposing on the people are so overboard. I don't believe after reading this book, that Covid19 is anywhere near what the 1918 flu entailed. If anything what is going on here in 2020, seems to me to be a bad regular flu season. I can't believe they have shut down the entire globe, the sad state of affairs that these "Leaders" which seem to have or showing the weaknesses or diseases of old age, and especially a loss of mental faculties, plus narcissict behaviors, extort their scare tactics on the masses. At such a cost, John Barry in the book even talks about how the government needs to be totally honest with folks. Tell the complete and honest truth, it has to be concrete. Instead, like he warned, now, no one trusts the government or the media. This creates more distrust, more fear, more hysteria, more anxiety, more depression and likely more health issues and death. More than the flu virus will kill. For what. Maybe what the government is doing is some kind of mass control of the people experiment? I just don't know, bodies are not piling up like in 1918. I don't want to give the book away, but John in his book says the range is from 21 million to 100 million deaths during the 1918-1919 pandemic. The number is so wide as many countries like Russia and S. America didn't report, they were to busy dealing with the dieing. Even in the US most of the best reporting he stated was from the military, who kept very good records of their servicemen and women, so many young soldiers crowed in encampments reading to go to war died, it hit hard. Read this book, all politicians and folks in positions of leadership should read this book. Think about it folks, the numbers do not add up, yet the country and the world are being crippled by the shut down. What, are they going to shut the world down every flu season now? Worldwide since 2010, I've read doing research, that between 290,000 and 650,000 die annually from seasonal flu. I was just speaking with someone who knows a nurse in a town close to me, here in Washington, that works at a care home. The first person who passed from Covid19 in this city also had terminal cancer, poor fellow, but that little detail wasn't reported. They purposely scare people and say it was Covid19. In the very good documentary on the diets of Americans "Forks over Knifes" it mentions how there is no money in a healthy population. Think about that, then look at what the effects on the people are, with how they are handling the situation, read between the lines. Is their a method to thier madness? I hate to think so, but??? They focus with such intensity on ever person who catches a cold now, and then bark at you on the press updates about it. Scare tactics to the extreme and it's working. I'll tell you there are so many crisis's in the world, hunger, homelessness and housing, mental illness, you could have a long list here, but you don't see any of the leaders really focusing any microscopes on those problems, but a seaonal flu. Gezz, it's the end of the world. To me, and I'm no expert, but seeing the numbers it appears not to be millions dying, people are not piling bodies on their porches, folks are not shooting their dogs, thinking the diasese started there . Did they totally get it wrong, and at what price? If so, who is going to pay for the damage. For many it will be too late. Read this book. We can't get it wrong if it does come and it's obvious more world wide collaboration needs to be at the ready. Did DC mess up and get it way wrong, panicking the entire country? Did other world leaders do the same to their countries? The damage is unspeakable and I think this may go down as one of the biggest most costly transgresion on society and the econmies ever. The madness needs to end and soon, society is being crippled by the day. After you read this book, you'll feel like you'll have a better understanding of the current affairs and it may give you some peace of mind. If nothing else, you'll learn a ton about virus's, and of the courage of those that confronted those virus's and bacteria's in the midst of all the misery and death. Keep on the Sunny Side and one of my favorite quotes on being nice and helpful to others! Maybe a lesson for leaders out there! “In every encounter. we either give life. or we drain it. "It was only influenza"
In the case of this influenza, a rose may be a rose but a flu is not always that simple. John Barry is a very good writer. His research is complete and his retelling of the sequence of events is compelling. I bought two of his books on the strength of his work, "The San Francisco Earthquake." It was the first of his books I read. I am 1/2 way through The Great Influenza and am glad I bought it. This is not a recreational read but it should be required reading. I believe it is better to know what could happen again than to wear blinders and live in ignorance. I also bought Rising Tide, about the great Mississippi River flood. Some of the information is valuable and I learned from it. But the author isn't good at sticking to facts, his sentence construction made me wince and his personal opinions about some of the scientists personal lives were unprofessional and condescending. A condensed version without all the rambling, but focusing on dates, data, and discoveries of the great scientists of that time would be much more informative and enjoyable. A Great Read
I just started reading...and it's great. The first part deals with the medical profession in the U.S. (and Europe) in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Amazing. European medical schools were so much better back then than those in the U.S.. A very interesting read.
