#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - NOW A NETFLIX FILM - A remarkable tale of the island of Guernsey during the German Occupation, and of a society as extraordinary as its name. "Treat yourself to this book, please--I can't recommend it highly enough."--Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love "I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers." January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she's never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb. . . . As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends--and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society--born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island--boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all. Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society's members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever. Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises and of finding connection in the most surprising ways. Praise for The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society "A jewel . . . Poignant and keenly observed, Guernsey is a small masterpiece about love, war, and the immeasurable sustenance to be found in good books and good friends." -- People "A book-lover's delight, an implicit and sometimes explicit paean to all things literary." -- Chicago Sun-Times "A sparkling epistolary novel radiating wit, lightly worn erudition and written with great assurance and aplomb." -- The Sunday Times (London) "Cooked perfectly point: subtle and elegant in flavour, yet emotionally satisfying to the finish." -- The Times (London)

"I can't remember the last time I discovered a novel as smart and delightful as this one, a world so vivid that I kept forgetting this was a work of fiction populated with characters so utterly wonderful that I kept forgetting they weren't my actual friends and neighbors. Treat yourself to this book pleaseI can't recommend it highly enough."Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love "Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows have written a wondrous, delightful, poignant book part Jane Austen, part history lesson. The letters in The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society aren''t addressed to you, but they are meant for you. It''s a book everyone should read. An absolute treasure."Sarah Addison Allen, author of Garden Spells "A jewel...Poignant and keenly observed...A small masterpiece about love, war and the immeasurable sustenance to be found in good books and good friends." People "It''s tempting to throw around terms like ''gem'' when reading a book like this. We come to know the brave and endearing people who survived the hardshipsand a few who did not....In addition to a fine story, this delightful book offers affirming messages about some of the most enduring forces in lifethe power of the written word, the strength of the human spirit and the value of relationships, even unexpected ones." Winston Salem Journal " The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a sweet, sentimental paean to books and those who love them.... It affirms the power of books to nourish people enduring hard times." The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a delight. Tart, insightful and fun."Mary Doria Russell, author of The Sparrow, A Thread of Grace and Dreamers of the Day "[A] marvelous debut.... • Fun light read!

It’s a light-hearted novel with interesting characters from the Channel Islands. I’m only about half way through. I’m the presenter in a month for my book club. I’m also listening to the audio version-which has great voices.

  • Fun book, serious subject

I sure I will enjoy this book this second time of reading. Purchased it to report for my book club (at my suggestion). I read it a few years back and loved it then. Thanks to the author for writing it.

  • Endearing tale of life during WWII on Guernsey Island.

First time I have read a book of letters. Unique way of writing a book. These letters really gave the reader a way to meet and learn about the characters. I have been reading a lot of books about WWII but I especially liked this book and how it humanized it's characters. It led me to want to see the movie made about it, but the movie was not available to be seen in the US because we are in different regions. Imagine my surprise when I found it on Netflix!

  • Don’t Judge a Book by its Title!

I bought this book to donate to my school after listening to the audiobook. I think students will enjoy it, if they get past the strange title. Written in letter form, the book describes conditions and relationships during the Nazi occupation of the island of Guernsey.

  • Good read!

This is a well written book with an interesting story to tell. I had never known that the Channel Islands were occupied by the Germans in WW2. The author uses an unusual format as the entire book is a series of letters written between a woman writing a story about the islands and the people on the island. It seems a difficult contrivance and one would think that it would lack a lot that makes a novel work, but the author did an excellent job. The characters were unique and heart warming. My entire book club enjoyed the book immensely.
