One of Hepburns & Lancasters FINEST! Mezmorizing....
I adore this film!!! When a wandering man with a belief in himself and in human faith ..that seems unbreakable.. ends up in the same town as the family of a woman who has just returned from seeking a husband (unsuccessfully) and seems to lack insight into who she really is.. the winds begin to blow. :) This movie is exciting, mezmorizing and leaves you guessing with quite a lot of suspense. You just don't know what the love this family of 4 has for each other will do.. will it be destructive? Will it be loving and help to soothe the hearts of the family members? In walks the RAINMAKER during this drought.. (of family ideas and of real rain).. and his faith in himself sparks the fathers curiosity. The ultimate dreamer, this man can convince anyone to believe he WILL help them ward away ... I adore this film!!! The rain is very symbolic in this film.. it is really the family that needs "family rain" to freshen their lives, ideas, self esteem, courage, and their connections to eachother. The father, the 2 brothers and a sister (Hepburn) all take to the RainMaker differently. Yet the father senses something about him that he likes.. something that seems to be.. special. He gives him a chance.. and in one night so many things happen to this group that everyone walks away affected for the rest of their lives, including the rainmaker himself. This movie is ONE of a kind. It truly shows us how family love can be harmful as well as helpful.. and what the power of faith and kindness can do.. what the audience gets out of this film at the ending is so very special!! It is wonderful to watch for families, teens, kids, or even just those that love a great plot and really colorful characters! It is Hepburn at her best here.. but then she always is. And there are just no words for the RAINMAKER (BURT LANDCASTER) he is absolutely livid.. so alive and then.. so complex. Everyone of the characters is complex in their own way, and quite different. No doubt the intent of the writer! Katherine and Burt steal the show.. but in no way is it only about them.. the whole family is intriguing. If you are wondering if you should buy? Buy!! Maybe it will give you luck and make it rain!! :)

Classics with merit
So happy to find two enjoyable classics for one affordable price! I really enjoyed the story of The Rainmaker and seeing Judy Holliday's early film role in Adam's Rib is always a delight. I definitely recommend both movies for classic movie fans.

The Rainmaker--You must live as each bird sings.
"If you don't believe in yourself, nobody else will." This line of dialog is one of the many jewels that are in this movie. "Starbuck" is speaking to Katherine Hepburn's character, who is facing a midlife crisis--unmarried and unloved as a woman. "Starbuck" loves her for a moment, and she changes, realizing at the same time that it is not in Starbuck's character to stay with her. She knows he also is looking for himself on her family's farm, where he had initially come to perform a miracle as a "rainmaker." It did rain."If you don't believe in yourself, nobody else will." A classic with numerous stars and upcoming stars. A story of acceptance of who you are. Not what others expect you to be. Having love of one's self. A wonderful sentimental story of discovery.
