For STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK (1984), I'll say that if you enjoyed the film, you'll enjoy the soundtrack. The movie is the second in what some like to call a "trilogy" of Star Trek films. Yes, I did say the second of a trilogy. If you know the movies ST II, III, and IV you'll understand what I'm talking about(check out Leonard Nimoy's commentary on the STAR TREK III DVD SE.) Of the orginal ST cast members' films, these three are my favorite. Spock dies saving the Enterprise at the end of STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (1982). This film picks up right where STAR TREK II left off with a recap to remind those of us who forgot or those who missed out entirely. The soundtrack does the same, so there are varoius familiar themes and tones that you would have heard in the previous film. ... For STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK (1984), I'll say that if you enjoyed the film, you'll enjoy the soundtrack. The movie is the second in what some like to call a "trilogy" of Star Trek films. James Horner is one of my top five all-time favorite film score composers and he returned to score STAR TREK III after scoring STAR TREK II and nearly a dozen other films in less than two years. Mr. Horner's career was really taking off with favorites like HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP, KRULL, 48HRS, SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES, and BRAINSTORM. STAR TREK III is his 26th score in just under a decade and he would continue to score some of the most memorable movies of all time including, ALIENS, AN AMERICAN TALE, WILLOW, THE ROCKETEER, APOLLO 13, and TITANIC, just to name a few! I believe that his involvement in these two Star Trek films is a major part of what made them so successful. Like most composers, James Horner has his own style. If you know his work, then you will recognize similarities that span over all of his music. I often compare his two Star Trek film scores with ALIENS. They all sound very similar but definitely distinct from one another. You will recognize his fancy for certain arrangements of strings, horns, and percussion. This soundtrack begins with a prolugue and main title. It starts off very rigid (almost like a "stinger") and then calms down to remind us of previous events (VERY much like ALIENS would do in the not-to-distant future.) He incorporates the original Star Trek theme (composed by Alexander Courage) into his score with his own twist. It is definitely STAR TREK, but its also very much James Horner. Throughout the soundtrack, the music builds with excitement and adrenalin as it mirrors the emotions of our heroes. 'The Klingons' track will remind you of the 'Combat Drop' from ALIENS. As much fun as you'll have listening to this soundtrack, you will wish it was longer as its a paltry 46 minutes in length and only contains 9 tracks, the last of which doesn't even appear in the film. Its a good thing too, as its Spocks theme done in early techno synthesized rock--very dated and very 80's. Track 9, though titled THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK and composed by James Horner, in my opinion does NOT belong on this soundtrack. Now, don't judge me yet, I love the 80's, but this track, although fun to listen to and enjoy on its own, it isn't amusing to hear after a coming off of the adrenalin rush from the beautiful orchestrated score you enjoyed during the previous 42 minutes. It almost sounds like an attempt to copy or compete with Klaus Doldinger and Giorgio Moroder's score for Unendliche Geschichte, Die(THE NEVERENDING STORY in the US) which also opened the same year-1984. Overall, this is a pretty good soundrack. I really enjoy listening when I need a Star Trek fix and I definitely recommend this to James Horner and sci-fi fans alike.

Geeky, but a great score!
If you ask me (and you have) I feel Star Trek II is the better movie, however Star Trek III has the better score. James Horner ranks up their with Jerry Goldsmith and even John Williams as one of the best composers of motion picture scores. I owned this some time ago on casette, as it was a hard to find item even 20 years ago. I bought this on cd because I truely feel this is one of the most majestic soundtracks for a science fiction film ever made. I know that's a strong statement, but I stand behind it 100%. James Horner has a unique arrangement of horns and strings in his music that truely make you feel the emotion and puts you in the movie. For those reasons alone I am very happy to, once again, be the owner of such a fine piece of motion picture history.If you ask me (and you have) I feel Star Trek II is the better movie, however Star Trek III has the better score.
