Produced by the team behind HE-MAN, SHE-RA, and BLACKSTAR, the 1970s cartoon series SPACE SENTINELS and FREEDOM FORCE displayed the same adroit blend of action and sci-fi/fantasy that would make Filmation's later shows so beloved. Though both series center around magically powered superheroes, SPACE SENTINELS' trio of strongman Hercules, shapeshifter Astrea, and speedmeister Mercury usually battle science-fiction foes like aliens and time-travellers, while FREEDOM FORCE's quintet--Hercules, Merlin, Sinbad, Super Samurai, and Isis--tend to face off against fantasy-driven mythological beasts. Remember It, but It Was Lacking
Space Sentinels was a very lackluster cartoon in the seventies, I thought it was actually earlier than the date given ('78 or so???) Astrid as the leader is not as impressive as the reviews on the box would lead one to believe. I didn't recall the removal of the three youths from their homelands. Some more focus on that would have actually been preferable. As it is, so far, of the episodes I have watched, bad guys have all been in secret hideouts in caves (why?) I do recall the one story with the Barbara Rhoades woman who was disguised as a bald alien who robbed Fort Knox of gold as she said they need it for fuel (and off she sprinted to her hideout in a cave) Freedom Force is a whole other story. No wonder it seemed I could never catch an episode of this one if there were only five ... Even more eyebrow furrowing is that Sinbad barely appears in the program, even given a comedy relief sidekick who just barely gets to speak in one episode. These were two of the Filmation cartoons I remember from the 70s. As noted in a documentary, Filmation's successes were Archie, Fat Albert and He Man. They had a seemingly endless score of other shows not as successful and Space Sentinels (which was changed to or from Young Sentinels) was one of them. As I've always found failed programs interesting, it was indeed intriguing to see the mere ten minute clip of a live action version of Space Sentinels that was proposed with the actors having memorized their lines and literally acting it out in the waiting room, it looked like. The fellow who voiced Mercury was portraying the live action Mercury. I guess the tall fella as Herc would have worn a wig.

THIS brings back memories!
I was very pleased to buy this for no other reason than for nostalgia's sake. I watched this as soon as it arrived. It took me back to when my cousins and I played out the characters after watching it every Saturday morning! LOL (Funny thig is, I always liked playing the asian characters(even though I'm a Caucasoid :D). I was always Mercury because my cousin Steven was bigger than me and ALWAYS played Hercules, but then I was always Super Samurai on my own! LOL) SU-PER...SAMURAIII! I don't remember Freedom Force, per se, but I remember the characters as being part of "Batman and the Super 7". Super Samurai was definitely my favorite. Others were Web-Woman, Manta and Moray, and even Isis in her cartoon form (LOVED the live-action show!). The shows on this disc might seem hokey compared to ... Excellent. I loved watching this show as a kid and found it entertaining. This is a set of cartoon that adults and children alike will enjoy.
