The rest of this hilarious Coen brothers film tells in flashback the fascinating tale of Norville Barnes and what brought him to that ledge.Tim Robbins stars as Barnes, a hick from Muncie, Indiana, intent on becoming a New York City executive. His timing is magical as he enters the doors of Hudsucker Industries just as the Hudsucker board determines it needs a patsy to run the company into the ground so it can buy up shares when the company goes public in a month. He hires Amy (the fast-talking Jennifer Jason Leigh) as his assistant--but unbeknownst to him, she is a reporter trying to expose him. THE HUDSUCKER PROXY is the Coen brothers' madcap romp through 1940s screwball comedy--albeit with a darker edge. The film is highlighted by sparkling art direction, fabulolus sets, snappy dialogue, and terrific supporting turns from Paul Newman, Charles Durning, and Bruce Campbell. Oh, and beware the Blue Letter....

Still unique enough to entertain
I got this movie because in a review I read of an employee of a large retail company they work for they mentioned it. Indeed, they were correct! If you have ever or presently do work for the Post Office, a newspaper or any Packing, Shipping, Manufacturing, Industrial, Distribution facility you are liable to find it quite funny in its parodies of those environments. If you are Blue Collar, you will really enjoy it. If you like Tim Robbins or Jennifer Jason Leigh (see Hateful 8 yet?) you will enjoy it. Paul Newman plays a bad guy, so that might be problematic for you if you like Paul Newman, but his performance was commendable and authentic. Disc video quality is on par with most 1980's SD video transfers, but this specific disc did come both as 4:3 SD on one side, and 16:9 Anamorphic ... One of my Top 100 Flicks of all time
Sadly I did not see this on the big screen when it was first released. I bet it was magnificent. It is wonderful on my little 55 inch TV but I'm sure it would have blown me away if seen in a theatre. A classic Everyman Tale - poor boy makes good. The best film the Cohen brothers ever made. Lush score, fabulous costuming and perfect casting. A truly Great Movie.

"You know,...for kids!" Comic Genius! Top 5 All Time!
Some nobody schlub from Muncie, Indiana, namely one Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins), arrives in the big town and has big plans. "You know, for kids". So begins one of the greatest movies ever written, acted, directed, edited, whatever. This is fantastic, great, superb, excellent... you get the point. So, Norville is out to take on the world, fresh out of Muncie Business College. He carries his plan for the next big thing in his shoe, it is drawn out in great detail on a neatly folded piece of plain white paper; it is a perfect circle. "You know, for kids." Robbins committed so fully to this role that I cannot imagine anyone else being able to pull it off. His stupid but smart, funny but not, noble but humble, etc... portrayal is amazing. Paul Newman, Sid Musburger, the # 2 guy, is looking for "a proxy, a pawn", someone that can fill the recently emptied head seat of the board of Hudsucker Industries; because Mr. Hudsucker leapt 43 stories "not counting the mezzanine". They need an idiot to make the stock drop and a Muncie man is perfect for that job. Heck, he even gets to pitch his idea to the board and they love it, for all the wrong reasons. Buzz, the elevator boy is friggin' hilarious. Jennifer Jason Leigh, does the fast talking, big city reporter schtick to perfection. She plays the hard-hearted softy very well and somehow makes it work between her and Robbins. Every word in this film is perfectly planned and you will miss half of what is funny because you are laughing. Watch this at least twice but probably better 3 or 4 times to get all of the dialogue. I don't know what this screenplay looked like on paper, but by the time it was on film, a masterpiece of comic genius was created. Surprisingly, not as many people as I would think have seen this movie, but I believe it should be required for everyone that has any appreciation for writing, comedy, dark humor, or film making. This is the Coen Brother's Opus; sheer genius.

Watch this flick without the proper voucher... AND THEY DOCK YA!
This review will be biased, because this one is my all-time favorite! Loaded with clever humor much like a Monty Python movie, right alongside 'bust a nut' zingers reminiscent of Airplane! Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins) is a lovable dope straight off the bus from Muncie Indiana, who winds up in NYC 'way over his head', if his 'head wasn't too big to be in over.' (Jennifer Jason Leigh's line) And when Sid Mussberger (Paul Neuman) shouts out 'WAIT A MINUTE', time itself literally stands still. After Waring Hudsucker (Charles Derning) commits suicide, and the board members of Hudsucker Industries are finished arguing about how many floors he actually falls, Mussberger needs a plan to stop 'any slob in a smelly T-shirt' from ... 'You know... for kids',and after he has 'the guys in R&D throw together a prototype so our meeting will have some focus' the stock winds up being worth more then it's ever been. Despite the plan running afoul, nobody else will be jumping through the window, because as Mussberger so eloquently exclaims, "PLEXIGLASS!... had it installed last week!''Hey Buddy, when is a sidewalk fully dressed... when it's Waring Hudsucker... get it Buddy?... it's a pun!' And then 'enter the dame' 'Her mother needs an operation... Adenoids... no, Lumbago!... That gag's got whiskers on it!' But maybe Norville is wise? 'He don't look wise', and there's not much doubt that he isn't! When he finds out that she's the reason his world falls apart, he just can't believe that a 'Muncie girl' would do that to him. So just as it looks as if the sidewalk will be wearing Norville, Moses, the old clock keeper, and the ghost of Mr Hudsucker himself, rush in to save the day! Just like the earlier references to Monty Python and Airplane, surely you will want to watch this one over and over again until you pick up on every comical nuance... wink wink - nudge nudge! And if you don't... 'THEY DOCK YA!'
