worth picking up and watching.
as more than a few films have already tackled the mexican crimianl underworld, film critic turned director gerardo naranjo had to put a new spin on the depressing state of his country. and for the most part he does. we see events through the innocent eyes of laura guerrero (newcomer stephanie sigman) a girl who lives a typically impoverished life with her family and sees the local beauty pageant as her only escape. but after following a fellow aspiring beauty queen to a club frequented by corrupt cops, she finds herself dodging bullets before being kidnapped by hoodlums who want to exploit her beauty. naranjo steers clear of making a heavy handed political statement and instead lets long shots and perfectly orchestrated sequences play out just slowly enough to allow the reality of her ... as more than a few films have already tackled the mexican crimianl underworld, film critic turned director gerardo naranjo had to put a new spin on the depressing state of his country. and for the most part he does. we see events through the innocent eyes of laura guerrero (newcomer stephanie sigman) a girl who lives a typically impoverished life with her family and sees the local beauty pageant as her only escape. but after following a fellow aspiring beauty queen to a club frequented by corrupt cops, she finds herself dodging bullets before being kidnapped by hoodlums who want to exploit her beauty. naranjo steers clear of making a heavy handed political statement and instead lets long shots and perfectly orchestrated sequences play out just slowly enough to allow the reality of her situation seep in. it makes for an uncomfortably grim viewing experience everywhere laura goes, leering eyes pursue her and it's clearly only a matter of time before a dug lord lino (noe hernandez) will make her do more than carry cash across the border. he may look south american yosemite sam carrying an ak-47 twice his size, but hernandez is a quietly terrifying presence opposite the tough but meek sigman. miss bala is a beautifully shot and perfectly edited. it's just a shame that, despite the slick execution, it has nothing notably to say other than bad people are bad. great movie and worth picking up.

Important but Tough
This was not easy to watch. While the movie is fiction, the story is not. The exploitation and abuse of young women by greedy and powerful men is real and needs to be understood for what it is... cruel, selfish and brutal. This movie is well acted. Actually, it is better than that. The actress who plays Miss Bala gives a stunning performance. The producers of this movie assembled a great cast, a piercing, believable script, and a Director with insight and the courage to bring this drama to the world. Every actor carried their role with skill and authenticity. The blending of beauty and depravity is not an easy task. The people who put this film together are brave and very skilled in their craft.
