The Bombing of Auschwitz - Should the Allies Have Attempted It? edited by Neufeld and Berenbaum should be in the library of anyone interested in history! Although the title implies a very narrow scope, the discussion touches on everything from related technical questions and moral issues to how we examine history itself ("What if?" history). I believe this work tackles this incredibly emotional controversy in a practical way - by providing a forum for prominent people representing the spectrum of opinions and a range of expertise to present their cases in their own words. To the credit of the editors, they have selected essays and contemporary documents that appear to be balanced and well-supported. More than one conclusion can be drawn. However, I was struck by the fact that I saw only ... The Bombing of Auschwitz - Should the Allies Have Attempted It? edited by Neufeld and Berenbaum should be in the library of anyone interested in history! Although the title implies a very narrow scope, the discussion touches on everything from related technical questions and moral issues to how we examine history itself ("What if?" history). I believe this work tackles this incredibly emotional controversy in a practical way - by providing a forum for prominent people representing the spectrum of opinions and a range of expertise to present their cases in their own words. To the credit of the editors, they have selected essays and contemporary documents that appear to be balanced and well-supported. More than one conclusion can be drawn. However, I was struck by the fact that I saw only one reference to the war on the other side of the globe! That was a remark that Doolittle's April, 1942 raid on Tokyo had only "demonstrative" value! Of course, that raid set up the Battle of Midway, which turned the tide against Japan! This illustrates how emotional 'blinders' can lead to gross distortions! Moreover, by ignoring the Pacific, one omits consideration of the atrocities committed by the Japanese against Allied POWs, civilian captives, and the nationals of China, The Philippines, etc.! Why weren't some of the Japanese torture factories bombed? Moreover, I believe that by emphasizing Jews, one adopts the mentality of the Nazi propagandists themselves! An example is a reference by one of the editors to "Poles and Jews." Are the two mutually exclusive? One writer sinks further into the trap by suggesting that the Allies should have labeled the bombings of German civilians in cities like Dresden "retailiatory" for the murders of Jews! Some writers state the USAAF should have launched the 1,200 plus mile mission using the eyewitness accounts of two escapees and some recon photos that fortuitously caught the Death Camp. This book appeared before 9/11. Knowing the limitations of even modern Intelligence that 9/11 and its aftermath have revealed, we can grant the USAAF some leniency! This book illustrates how we can lose our own humanity (and common sense) when we try to deal with extraordinary criminality. Most seem to agree that the 'window of opportunity' to reduce the death toll at Auschwitz extended only from June until November, 1944. Few of the writers place significant emphasis on the fact that every available resource was required to support the June 6 invasion of France. The likely consequences of the failure of the invasion are horrible to contemplate! Similarly, I don't believe the writers recognize the urgency of overrunning the Reich to prevent increased deployment of the "wonder weapons." No one mentions the July 20 attempt by the German military itself (including no less a figure than Field Marshall Rommel) to kill Hitler, which occured during this 'window.' Certainly this 'incident' had to strengthen the hand of those who emphasized that defeating Germany was the surest way to end the atrocities! On the other hand, only fleeting mention is made of what might have been a missed opportunity - demanding that the Germans cease using poison gas. I can think of several genuine benefits without playing into the propagandists' hands or exposing friendlies under German control to retaliation. Linking the subject to tragedies (Rwanda, etc.) we have faced recently, and even today, increases the value of this book! Douglas Harr, MD
