THE RED VIOLIN follows the unusual journey of an original and unique violin as it survives three centuries, ultimately turning up at a present-day auction in Montreal. The violin transforms all those who play it into a Svengali, from traveling Gypsies to a famous concert violinist in England. The mysterious object also narrowly avoids confiscation in Communist China, and seems to always survive the different lives of those it touches. In the present day it becomes the subject of fascination for a violin historian, played by Samuel L. Jackson, who discovers that he has stumbled upon the much sought after Red Violin, leading him to consider a deception of his own kind as the film nears its climax.

Challenging film but worth every minute of concentration to follow it.
First, I enjoyed the movie but was deeply moved by the multitude of tragedies that it portrayed. The ultimate conclusion wasn't really revealed to me until I read many comments by viewers on the Internet Movie Data Base. The last of those described a conclusion that totally escaped me on the initial viewing, but made better sense than the obvious one. I don't want to give it away with less import than the writer gave it, so I recommend logging on to IMDB and reading the comments for yourselves. Even if you're not inclined to delve into the movie's deeper meaning, I am sure everyone will enjoy the story depicted by this incredible cinematic presentation.First, I enjoyed the movie but was deeply moved by the multitude of tragedies that it portrayed. With the elegant little violin singing throughout, as unimportant as it may seem, it charms - and soon its story takes you through times, countries, politics, and more - with adventure, mystery, money, romance, passion, music and art and a powerful storyline. The production is top quality - super rich colors and perfect set and costume design - great camera work! I will not give away its secrets - that would ruin it for you! I bought it here on DVD for my player and at iTunes in digital format for happy enjoyment on all my devices - at home or remotely. Happy customer! Excellent movie - very touching and well written!
This movie moves through many centuries and various countries/languages as it follows the creation of a "stradivarius" type violin in Mideaval Europe to it's sale at modern-day Christie's-type auction in New York. This violin takes on a life of its own, as the author masterfully takes you through the various timeslines in history - Mideaval Europe, 16th Century England, Mau's China, to today's New York city. It also highlights various types of people who had laid hands on such a musical masterpiece. It was so belieavable, I actually "googled" it to see if there was such a violin in existence. Incredibly woven tapestries of an elegant story.
I believe the film flew under the radar when first released. It is an underrated example of a journey, not by the protagonist or antagonist per se, but the object of interest and central prop/object around which the story unfolds. Beautifully photographed and expertly designed to cover the centuries of the story's progression, it is a remarkable film that is begins as a mystery and keeps the viewer in amazement. As the litany of characters weave a story of passions, greed and enchantment in a story at its most nuanced, we are intrigued and entertained by the story, the characters and the journey....I believe the film flew under the radar when first released. The Red Violin is a complex and brilliant movie!
Many people dont realize that the red violin is in fact a journey to consider the treatment that beautiful art and indeed beautiful women have had historically in their desire to be captivated and most rightly appreciated by the best possible admirer. In this respect it is in fact a metaphorical tale. Its a bit of a stretch for some however that ultimately is the sum of the tale thats told here. In an age where everyone's views are deemed equal it becomes a bit of a farce to maintain otherwise or to seek to hold on to what you feel is yours in this respect in the way of a truly deserved place in the line to acquire and appreciate things for their true worth. A brilliant movie with rich settings in various locales including scenes shot in Italian in China settings too along with ...
