In 1944, a six-man American intelligence and reconnaissance unit is sent by their reckless major on a mission in a remote part of the Ardennes forest on the German front. Isolated in a remote villa in the dead of winter, they wind up developing a cryptic relationship with a small band of German soldiers nearby who've all but given up on the war effort. The disillusioned soldiers come face-to-face with one another in a beautifully filmed series of events, sharing Christmas carols, snowball fights, and a mutual desire to stay alive. Ethan Hawke stars as Will Knot, the young leader of the American unit who agrees to fake a battle with the German soldiers, who want to surrender peaceably but save their reputation. The cast includes Gary Sinise, Peter Berg, Kevin Dillon, Arye Gross, and Frank Whaley as Will's fellow recon officers. Against the hauntingly beautiful landscape of the Alpine tundra, the young men must face their darkest fears while trying to escape the horrors of war. This powerful and quietly stylish ensemble drama features lyrically beautiful voice-overs delivered by Hawke as he questions the validity of war and his spiritual place in the world. The film is based on the autobiographical novel by William Wharton.

War and reality
It is tempting to believe that WWII was fought by huge forces fighting on massive battlefields, and many times that was accurate. However, for most men, the battles are much smaller. They see only what is in the immediate area, and know only those very near them. This film, while fictional, accurately portrays war as seen by the common soldier. The Battle of the Bulge was fought by little groups, often cut off from other little groups, in the cold of mid-winter. Into this situation a small patrol sets out to reconnoiter the neighborhood. What they find is a small patrol of Germans doing the same thing. What they find is a small band of German soldiers who "know" the war is really over, and their only desire is to remain alive. With an informal cease fire, together they plan a sham battle to satisfy the German need to appear properly engaged. However, that's easier said than done, and not everyone buys into the idea. While these events might not be purely historical, the soldiers you meet certainly are. Everyone is modeled upon real soldiers who faced real situations. Some are fanatical, some are logical, and some are emotional wrecks. That's life in sustained combat. Watch this film and marvel at the things man can confront, and survive.

Better than given credited
a good war movie for the fan of that genre and it was kind of cool seeing some of these guys early in their careers. This movie is not well known comparably to other war movies but is still very engaging. The story is good and I believe somewhat based on a true story or at least a wishful thought. Don't want to say true story because that is tossed around so much by Hollywood now when the only true thing is it occurred at night or in the winter, etc.a good war movie for the fan of that genre and it was kind of cool seeing some of these guys early in their careers. Not a typical War Movie!
This star studded military movie is high on my list of movies I will keep!! It is not a typical War movie as there is perhaps one or two scenes in it where the rifles are actually shot. The plot in this film comes across as the boys are just playing Army. Most of it takes place in an abandoned German house while the Army boys wait for the German front to come through. A small German post is discovered nearby with the the initial confrontation of a snowball fight and the pursuing attempts at friendly communication. A German segment attempting to resolve things so they can surrender peacefully and eventually to this American Squad to live and go home. Unfortunately not everyone was on board with the plan of the taking of hostages and it doesn't go down peacefully! It is perhaps a ... Saw this movie when I was a kid & I had to buy it now that I'm an adult to add it to my collection!!

A Midnight Clear
Hadn't heard of this movie before. But anything with Gary Sinise had to be good and it did not disappoint. Well worth a watch.
