Director Sean Penn's (THE INDIAN RUNNER, THE CROSSING GUARD) third film features Jack Nicholson as Jerry Black, a retired detective whose final case ultimately causes his slow descent into madness. In the midst of his retirement party, Black decides to join Detective Stan Krolak (Aaron Eckhart) on one last case. The molested body of an eight-year-old girl is found in the Nevada mountains. When the chief suspect turns out to be a mentally challenged Native American (Benicio Del Toro), Black is not convinced of his guilt despite his confession. Unable to forget the promise he made to the dead girl's mother that he would find her daughter's killer, Black becomes determined to catch a monster that no one else believes is out there. His resolve increases when he realizes that two similar unsolved murders occurred in the same area in recent years, and the case hits closer to home when Black befriends Lori (Robin Wright Penn), a waitress with a threatening ex-husband, and her eight-year old daughter, Chrissy (Pauline Roberts). Nicholson is compelling in this study of a man whose obsession slowly eats away at his sanity as he attempts to keep his promise by any means necessary.

    Somewhat strange. It's not a bad movie, just confusing.

    It should be noted from the off that this is not police procedural detective piece. This is a slow burn, moody and edgy picture. "The Pledge" somewhat strange. It's not a bad movie, just confusing. With Nicholson as a detective trying to find a killer. There are so many redundant scenes, and even the useful scenes are just way too long. I feel that the film just drags on and on. This film is a great disappointment.

    Great film and quite impressed

    The performance from Mr. Nicholson is amazing. This is a first for me to watch given a thumbs up from Roger Ebert. Jack is who he is as an actor and will always be impressive in my opinion.

    Great film where subtly and irony take lead over action and obvious plot points

    Underrated film that hones in on coincidence, irony, and fate as its central theme. Sometimes we're never given the knowledge that our actions helped steer the course of destiny where it rightfully belongs.

    Sean Penn and Jack Nicholson make it work.

    Sean Penn directs Jack Nicholson once again after "The Crossing Guard". This time delving deep into the sanity of Retired Detective Jerry Black (Nicholson), who promises a grieving family to find a brutal murderer of their young daughter and bring him to justice. A fantastic film. Not recommended for the weekend "feel good" movie watcher, but those who can stomach the real and nerve-wrecking feel of the film. Supported by beautiful landscapes, soundtrack and the outstanding supporting performances by Aaron Eckhart and Robin Wright Penn. Outstanding.

    Great movie..

    Jack was great as always. Lesson to be learned.. Doing the best thing for the general public may not be good for you yourself personally & those who care for you.
