Marie Curie is a nonfiction biography for young readers that would be a nice supplement to a unit on famous scientists or a resource for a research project. The story of Curie's early life, her marriage to Pierre Curie, her unprecedented two Nobel Prizes, and death in 1934 is told with straightforward and clear text. Abundant photographs with detailed captions support the reader's understanding, and young readers will enjoy small drawings of Curie that appear throughout and share personal details about her life. Subject-specific vocabulary is essential for comprehension, so early readers may need support initially with words like cancer, chemistry, or radium. The glossary provides simple definitions for the supporting adult, but some students may need assistance with pronunciation. A timeline runs across the bottom of each page, adding important events in chronological order. The book closes with a "Read More" section and an Internet site for more information. The books listed for further research have been published recently and should be readily available. This book was designed to meet the national history standards for units on people and culture, but science educators will find that Marie Curie also meets National Science Education Standards through its introduction of the historical development of radium and its thoughtful portrayal of science as a human endeavor. It is an excellent book to put in the hands of upper elementary and lower middle school students., This title is a minibiography of Marie Curie. The book is small; 16 cm x 18 cm. The 24 pages consist of a text organized into three chapters: "Young Marie," "Marie and Pierre" and "Famous Scientist." Each double spread includes a captioned black-and-white photograph and, on the facing page, two or three sentences printed in a large font. A simple time line runs across the bottom. A glossary offers simple definitions of terms. The book includes an index/word list. The simple, controlled vocabulary format makes it impossible to provide any depth of coverage of the life and work of Marie Curie. It is good, however, to see scientists being included in such a series for those just learning to read. The book may also be useful to those working with older ESL students. Schools and libraries where such series for beginning readers are in demand may want to add this title to their collections.
